About this listen
This magnificent biography of Henry VIII is set against the cultural, social and political background of his court - the most spectacular court ever seen in England - and the splendour of his many sumptuous palaces. An entertaining narrative packed with colourful description and a wealth of anecdotal evidence but also a comprehensive analytical study of the development of both monarch and court during a crucial period in English history. As well as challenging some recent theories, it offers controversial new conclusions based on contemporary evidence that has until now been overlooked. This is a triumph of historical writing which will appeal equally to the general listener and the serious historian.

WHERE THIS BOOK CAME FROM.
One aspect of this book that encourages me is that I know that in the area where the author lived at the time there is a popular fascination for Henry the Eighth's court in general - and Nonsuch Palace in particular. The wheres and wherefores of the period are much debated locally both at popular and more intellectual levels. So like a book on mining written in Newcastle and a book on tulips written in Spalding I think we can be sure Alison knows her stuff. A very sound and thorough piece of work and very easy to listen to.

Perfect combination of author and narrator
This book has been my constant bedtime companion for the last few weeks, 25 hours of fascinating detail about the life and times of perhaps England's most infamous monarch. Never sensational, meticulously researched, and beautifully told by Phiyllida Nash. The perfect combination of author and narrator.

Excellent
Fascinating history still amazes me how there are so many contradictory histories on Henry. But still fascinating all the same

Great for research!
I don't know how this book compares to Weir's other works, as this is the first time I've read her, but it did make me want to read more.
If you want to learn something about what life was like at Henry VIII's court, how they lived, what they wore, ate, did for leisure, and how the court functioned, this book has a wealth of details. It's also a good account of the six wives, who they were, and the shifting moods and politics that made them come and go. It can be a bit slow at times, but I remained engaged through the whole thing, and recommend it to you.

Excellent
A well-written account of the life and times of Henry VIII from a quite different perspective, I found if both informative and enjoyable. Beautifully read by Phyllida Nash, I would certainly recommend it to anyone interested in this period of history.
