Summary
Heroine is based on the true story of Danna Davis and her 10 years in the US Army. A survivor of military sexual trauma, hers is a human story exploring healing, forgiveness, and what speaking your truth really means - with grit, lyricism, and necessary black humor.
On a dangerous mission inside a combat zone, Sgt Davis must work with the perpetrator of her sexual attack to get her squad home safely. Is peace possible?
This audiobook is more of a fully realized radio drama, with fully immersive sound design from sound designer and foley artist Heather Andrews and narration from Audie award-winning narrator Mary Jane Wells. Heroine began as Wells' award-winning solo performance, winning a Scottish Theatre Arts Trust Award and a Made in Scotland Award on its world premiere at Assembly Rooms, at The Edinburgh Festival 2018. Heroine's USA debut was at The Kennedy Center, Washington, DC, in February 2020.

This story contains triggers, strong language, depictions of sexual violence, and graphic content. It is a fully realized story, but not without the humor that makes Danna, who refuses to be a figure of tragedy, a fully rounded person. Its intentions are to bring listeners into the heart of Danna's full experience frankly and responsibly, to give her account the honesty and dignity it deserves, and to tell her story in all its colors. Woven deep into the fabric of Heroine is the rubric that "It is not the event that has the power to define your life, but the story you choose to tell about it."

Theatrical and brave
A tour de force by the writer and performer Mary Jane Wells. It’s a tough listen, but you will not regret listening right to the end, it is heartbreaking and shocking, and also funny - I particularly enjoyed the primal screaming section! It’s like listening to an amazing radio play rather than hearing a book, so a massive shout out to the sound designer Heather Andrew is due as well. I’m off for a rest. A run of the mill audio book this ain’t!

Impressive
A lively, interesting and often humorous depiction of some truly horrific events. The issues were dealt with sensitively and it was like listening to a radio play. Well produced. I’d love to see the stage production.

This is a gripping listen. It made me laugh - a real burst of mirth and also moved me to tears. A fascinating, harrowing but ultimately uplifting story that takes you to all sorts of places. I was mesmerised by the immersive nature of this audio story and cant stop thinking about it.

Harrowing and Hopeful
A beautifully written and spoken story. So many layers to the storytelling bringing Dana’s life in the army as a survivor of rape and war into the now. At times heartbreaking, funny and thoughtful. Wells is a brilliant writer and amazing performer. And the sound design adds to the narrative enormously.
