About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
'Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic Socialism as I understand it'.
Thus wrote Orwell following his experiences as a militiaman in the Spanish Civil War, chronicled in Homage to Catalonia. Here he brings to bear all the force of his humanity, passion and clarity, describing with bitter intensity the bright hopes and cynical betrayals of that chaotic episode: the revolutionary euphoria of Barcelona, the courage of ordinary Spanish men and women he fought alongside, the terror and confusion of the front, his near-fatal bullet wound and the vicious treachery of his supposed allies.
A firsthand account of the brutal conditions of the Spanish Civil War, George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia includes an introduction by Julian Symons in Penguin Modern Classics.

Also, Orwell tries to hard to simplify the war and he tries to turn it into a straight left v right war, but it’s more complex than that.
All in all the story keeps you hooked and you will be through this book faster than you expect

I had not yet grasped so vividly the possible contradictions within the left as before this book. I see a lot of glossing over of the Spanish civil war but from a marxist's point of view, I have also now heard a credible account of the workings of the anarchist movement and functionality.
reading this, I am met with a greater awareness of the fighting that happens on the front lines of any war but how potent the efforts of the writers are as well. the pen's fighting echoes on for centuries.
I would say this is necessary reading.
