About this listen
Unlike the TV series and the movie, these books have a certain adult charm. In my generation, there wasn't a boy or girl who didn't want to rebel like henry, and this would've probably been the same for adults of past generations, only with characters such as Just William and The Naughtiest Girl, even if they never acted on it. Simon is able to capture this long buried desire with adults, and the present desire with children. This must be why she is so popular. I think the thing is about the Horrid henry books is that Simon doesn't preach to children. She just writes fun and riotous stories that fulfill every child's deepest and darkest desires. Children don't want morals shoved down their faces when they read. They're already taught how to act by adults, and just the same as some books take children to previously unexplored caves and castles, Simon allows children to explore an equally unthinkable desire.
However, I'm not sure if I wouldn't even bought these books again is it wasn't for the flawless narration by Miranda Richardson. I don't think I've ever heard a better children's book narrator, and that's no exaggeration.
Some books are better left in the recesses of your childhood, but these books in my opinion do not apply. I'm not surprised little me loved them so much, but I will be surprised if these books do not turn out to be classics as the Just William books are now.
