About this listen
** SHORTLISTED FOR THE YA BOOK PRIZE 2022 **
The Hollow sisters—Vivi, Grey and Iris—are as seductively glamorous as they are mysterious. They have black eyes and hair as white as milk. The Hollow sisters don't have friends—they don't need them. They move through the corridors like sharks, the other little fish parting around them, whispering behind their backs.
And everyone knows who the Hollow sisters are. Because one day the three Hollow sisters simply disappeared. And when they came back, one month later, with no memory of where they had been, it was as if nothing had changed. Almost nothing. Apart from, for example, the little scar that had appeared in the hollow of their throats ... and a whispering sense that something is not quite right about them, despite (or maybe because of) the terrible passion to be with them that they can exert on anybody at will...
A thrilling, twisting, novel that is as seductive and glamorous as the Hollow sisters themselves....
©2021 Krystal Sutherland (P)2021 Bonnier Books UKIt was a little overly descriptive at times, often making comparisons to things it didn't need to ("it fell into the water...with a plop... like a stone dropped by a small child...standing looking wistfully...at the side of a dark river). Some of this was great for character and world building, but there were quite a few times when it was just too much. Given the subject matter and genre, it sometimes felt like it took an age to get to where we were going, which removed suspense and slowed the plot.
It's not constantly throughout the book, but often the way the dialogue was written leans towards juvenile and uncreative ("Blah blah blah" NAME said. "Blah blah blah" OTHER NAME said). Very repetitive, but as I said, this was often bit wasn't all the time.
I didn't need the 17 year old girl kissing a 20 something year old man. It added nothing. His ending coould have happened without that and nothing would have been lost.
The narrator fit who was telling the story well, however she did mispronounce a few words here and there. For example, Satan was SAT-ANN.
The ending felt a little anti-climatic. After how long it took to get there, I needed something a little more shocking, with more peril and consequence. I also didn't like that we never found out the origin (no spoilers, you'll understand after you finish). This wasn't an ambiguous, "use your imagination" ending...it simply doesn't answer the biggest question. It left me wondering "what was the point?". Lastly, once the third act got going, it was very predictable.
All in all, a decent listen, but left me, if you'll allow, a little hollow.
Decent but left me hollow

An eerily addictive contemporary fairytale

I loved that at the center of this book was sisterly love.
Also the plot twist at the end for who the villain was all along was brilliant. I loved that reveal. I really liked how this story was told and how it ended. But a part of me wants either a sequel or a short story about Vivi and Iris's next trip into the Halfway.
I would 100% recommend reading this book if you like dark, creepy and imaginative stories.
