Editor reviews

In Household Tales actress Kelly Lintz brings a contemporary voice to the traditional fairy stories of the Brothers Grimm. Lintz's performance invokes a brilliant, tireless nanny - perhaps one with a degree in English lit - reading bedtime stories to mesmerized children. The brevity of these recordings is suitable for immature attention spans, but the language itself can be at times more suitable for adults, as it becomes apparent that frogs and dogs and sparrows spoke in a slightly more antiquated discourse in 1812 than they do today. Lintz, however, brings a fluency and exaggerated emotion to the occasionally outmoded language that easily fills in any gaps in a child's linguistic understanding.

Irritating narration

It’s great to hear all of these traditional Grimm tales in one place but the narration was so irritating! Every character had an English accent that was really badly put on - the tales are traditionally German so I’m not sure why the narrator decided English diction was the best choice rather than her native accent but if this was important to the recording then why not use an English narrator? There is nothing worse than a badly put on accent!
I had to stop listening after a few stories because it was just too annoying.

Exhaustive but not easy to navigate

This appears to be an exhaustive collection of every brothers Grimm fairytale ever published with nearly 27 hours of material. In such a mammoth collection of stories, it would have made sense to have chapter by chapter navigation, but each chapter appears to be an hour long so not easy to find individual tales in this collection. Also, there is no information on what is contained in each chapter so it’s difficult to identify where individual tales are located in the collection. Narration is not very good, it’s flat, dull and lacks character and I wouldn’t want to listen to this as a stretch. Download the e-book.

Rubbish - rather have a book

Buy a book. Flat delivery from the single narrator. I understood free with trial but does not appear to be the case. Almost twice the cost of the book. Trying to work out how to cancel without costing more money to make a call.
