About this listen

Everyone thinks they know the real Gordon Ramsay: rude, loud, pathologically driven, stubborn as hell. But this is his real story…

This is Gordon Ramsay’s autobiography – the first time he has told the full story of how he became the world’s most famous and infamous chef: his difficult childhood, his brother’s heroin addiction and his failed first career as a footballer: all of these things have made him the celebrated culinary talent and media powerhouse that he is today. Gordon talks frankly about:

  • his tough childhood: his father’s alcoholism and violence and the effects on his relationships with his mother and siblings
  • his first career as a footballer: how the whole family moved to Scotland when he was signed by Glasgow Rangers at the age of fifteen, and how he coped when his career was over due to injury just three years later
  • his brother’s heroin addiction.
  • Gordon’s early career: learning his trade in Paris and London; how his career developed from there: his time in Paris under Albert Roux and his seven Michelin-starred restaurants.
  • kitchen life: Gordon spills the beans about life behind the kitchen door, and how a restaurant kitchen is run in Anthony Bourdain-style.
  • and how he copes with the impact of fame on himself and his family: his television career, the rapacious tabloids, and his own drive for success.

Very entertaining

Loved it. Ramsay comes across as very honest, he speaks his mind, as we know, and here he puts you under his spell talking about his life story at 90 miles an hour. I was left feeling that though he is a hard man, he's very much a product of his environment, especially his vicious father, who he is ultimately different from.

Good but a bit short

Loved Marco Pierre White's autobiography so this was a natural follow on. I loved the book and Gordon's voice is easy to listen to. I just wish it contained more

Hear about the man we all know, but don't...

Having just finished Marco White's book, this makes a great follow up as they talk a lot about each other in both. Gordon Ramsay has had an upbringing that anyone would find tough yet created an incredible empire. I hope he does a follow up soon as it would be great to hear more especially with his recent adventures with Gino and Fred! Only slight issue is the sound quality is poor at times (loud then soft) which is a shame as hearing Gordon read is one of the treats here. Loved this and was surprised to hear the numbers talked around salary and pay, I'm definitely in the wrong industry 👍

Great book by Great Chef

A deeply personal story of Gordon's Ramsay life and upbringing that helps to understand how he got to where he is now. Spoiler: it's all hard graft.

Highly Enjoyable!

This is so good. Gordon Tells his business life story in a short but very entertaining book. At first I was surprised it had 3 chapters only but honestly it's packed with stories of a great authentic life! Well done Gordan!

There's so much more to Ramsay than the F-word...

Great hearing from him in his own words about his tough childhood and early career followed by his determination and work and life ethic. This is a true rags to riches storey and leaves the listener inspired and in awe. It also serves as a great entrepreneurial and success case study.

Yes, chef, I like it.

This is a great story, brilliantly well told and narrated by Gordon himself. His breathy, chatty style is just right for the content. The first f...... h... comes as a bit of a shock (I kept expecting him to be bleeped!) but it is no holds barred as he describes his tough childhood and rise to the top. Skulduggery and backstabbing in the kitchen and his views on other chefs provide laughs, but his total passion for food, and, indeed, life comes over clearly. Humble he ain't, but obviously very proud of what he has achieved, and quite right too. Very inspiring.
