About this listen
From New York Times best-selling author Penelope Ward comes a new forbidden enemies-to-lovers story…
It all started with an unexpected phone call.
Two years after my fiancé passed away in an accident, his father died suddenly, leaving Brad’s adult special-needs brother with no one to care for him. The next thing I knew, I was on a cross-country drive to New Hampshire where I’d be moving in to look after Scottie until I could get him into a group home.
The last thing I ever expected?
I wouldn’t be taking care of him alone.
Josh Mathers, my fiancé’s best friend—who also happened to be my sworn enemy—insisted he was the better person for the job. He told me to go back to California, and I told him where he could stick that demand. Our disdain for each other wasn’t anything new. It dated back to a text I’d accidentally read years ago. We hated each other. But we both loved Scottie, so neither of us budged. Now we were living together in a tiny house—with one available bedroom. Thank goodness it was only temporary.
Over time, I realized the broody jerk I thought I knew was different than I’d imagined.
I found myself slowly growing attached to someone I once considered the enemy...and growing attracted to him. Sure, both of us were guilt-ridden over Brad. We were also two grown people with pent-up frustration toward one another—stuck in a cabin in the woods. But this was Josh. I could never.

Where do you even begin to comment on complete perfection? This plot has it all, and the major character, while not saying much, is completely captivating. The author clearly has firsthand knowledge and has done a tremendous lot of research to write such a sensitive and interesting book. Scottie is a grown adult who suffers from severe autism. His solitary existence is disrupted when his father dies, and he is unable to communicate through speech. Unfy's only living legal relative is his aunt, who, quite rightly and without prejudice, is struggling to deal. Scottie has the mind and attitude of a child, and when things go wrong, he throws temper tantrums, etc. 200 pounds of guy is difficult to deal with, and Carly steps forward, Scottie's late brother's fiancée, as well as Jag, Ben's close friend. The story unfolds as the two take on the responsibility of caring for an extremely special needs boy. For such a profound and challenging topic, it is really skillfully written, edited, and flows so easily. It is not unpleasant to read and is sprinkled with wit and life experiences. The bond between the three is sweet and heartwarming. The reader is engulfed in romantic involvements and denial as Josh and Carly learn they don't dislike each other, but rather the contrary. There is a great HEA, but there are some fantastic obstacles and painful times to overcome first. This author never fails to captivate the reader, and her penmanship is superb.
Narration between Andi Ardnt and Sebastian York is always a winning combo.

When Brad is killed in a car accident he leaves behind his fiancé Carly, and his best friend Josh, two people who loved him very much, yet hated each other. Two years later they come together to care for Brad’s autistic brother (a grown man), following the death of his father. Discovering that it takes two to look after Scottie they call a truce, and lo and behold attraction becomes an issue. Dealing with a fully grown autistic man, battling feelings of guilt and sexual attraction all take it’s toll on the couple though, and emotions are high. I loved all the characters. Josh and his family were a blast, brotherly love and all that. Scottie was adorable, and both Carly and Josh were wonderful, patient and super caring with him, I loved that. An enjoyable, emotional and sexy small town romance. Narrated by Andi Arndt and Sebastian York, the perfect couple. Loved it.
