About this listen

I saw it. He smothered her, pressing his hands on her face. The police don't believe me; they say it's impossible - but I know what I saw.

Xander Shute - once a wealthy banker, now living on the streets - shelters for the night in an empty Mayfair flat. When he hears the occupants returning home, he scrambles to hide. Trapped in his hiding place, he hears the couple argue and he soon finds himself witnessing a vicious murder. But who was the dead woman, who the police later tell him can't have been there? And why is the man Xander saw her with evading justice?

As Xander searches for answers, his memory of the crime comes under scrutiny, forcing him to confront his long-buried past and the stories he's told about himself. How much he is willing to risk to understand the brutal truth?

Was Enthralled by the book, well written, well read, and then the ending... Oh. Hm.

Very good.

Not an easy listen. Very dark, deep, intellectual and compelling. A brilliant book, brilliantly written and brilliantly narrated

Brilliant and disturbing

Good story base and the narrator was good as in he changed the inflection in his voice and it was much better than those who don't change at all but his angry voice made me laugh.
sometimes the archaic language was tough going.
the police and court procedure inaccuracies were annoying.

Good story, but but hard going at times.

From start to finish, a compelling listen
The first time listening to this narrator, who did a great job. I was captivated the whole time. He made it easy to listen to the story, & his voice absolutely suited the personality of the character
This well written book, made you you feel great empathy for the main character, who’s story took you on his forgotten path in time, and back to the present with great ease..
I will definitely go looking for more books by this author & narrator

I loved this audio book!

I found my attention wandering at times, and it wasn't the most exciting twist ever but overall an easy listen and quite enjoyable.

Easy listen

I rarely write reviews - my bad - but this story was so wonderfully written and so perfectly narrated that I had to. The plot itself is compelling if a little weak in parts but the narrator really brought the eloquence of the author’s words to life. The combination is like an audible work of art. Listen to it and love the language and you won’t be disappointed

Beautifully written and narrated

A great thriller with just enough crime procedure to keep it feeling real. The problem is set out from the beginning before the main character, Xander, finds himself dragged into a confusing case. Betrayed by his own faltering memory - which we learn more about as the story unravels for him as much as it does for the police.
It's a compelling story with numerous twists and turns. The switching of point of view, present day and flashback moments, and trying to battle through the fogged mind of the protagonist make for a testing read at times.
Xander, our main character and guide through the story, is not an old trope character. He doesn't have the the old trappings of a war-torn soul, or the pains of the lost old family, a history of gambling and aggressive behaviour, etc ad infinitum... There's something quite unique about his character which I really liked.
I recommend this book wholeheartedly, and definitely the audio performance of it.

Engrossing and complex thriller

A great listen with twists in the plot the whole way throughout , worth a listen.

A good listen

I liked the story and the way it unfolded was engaging. The answer at the end was fitting in the way the narrative was spun out but I did wonder what the outcome would have been for the main character. Toward the end I did get a bit tired of the main character’s constant self blame and misplaced guilt. So hence 4 stars and not 5. Definitely worth a listen though.

A traumatised mind
