Le "illusioni perdute", pubblicato in tre parti fra il 1837 e il 1843, sono quelle di Luciano mentre affronta il mondo letterario alla ricerca di un suo futuro, ma anche quella della famiglia nei suoi confronti riguardanti le proprie capacità e qualità personali. Questo è uno dei libri più lunghi dell'intera "Commedia Umana", e, nel giudizio di molti tra cui Marcel Proust, è anche il migliore scritto dall'autore. Negli intrighi dei giornalisti (e, del resto, come scrive Balzac nella dedica iniziale del libro a Victor Hugo, perché non dovremmo scrivere un libro sulle nostre vite?), che si arrogano il potere del successo o dell'insuccesso di un libro, uno spettacolo teatrale, un'attrice, o un politico usando lo stesso meccanismo di infamie e lodi alternate, possiamo leggere le radici di ciò che ci è già familiare.

Ecco, con le parole dell'autore, il quadro che informa di sé tutto il libro. "Oggi, da voi, il successo è la ragione suprema di ogni azione, qualunque essa sia. Il fatto in se stesso non è dunque più nulla, è tutto nell'idea che gli altri se ne fanno." E, per questo successo, il protagonista potrebbe arrivare a firmare un vero e proprio patto col diavolo? Ma Balzac offre anche un esempio positivo, di anime belle che, con l'"addio alla gloria" si costruiscono la strada verso la felicità.
