Summary
A timely and arresting debut novel about what it means to be a Black woman in the world. Perfect for fans of Queenie and Americanah.
Kemi is ready to change her life. She's sick of being second-guessed in the boardroom, tired of smiling politely while men gaze at her body, bored of dating surveys that tell her Black African women are the least desired in America. Moving across the world, for a new job, certainly things will be different?
Brittany-Rae is tired of serving others. She's determined not to struggle like her parents did. As a flight attendant, she's seen the way the super-wealthy float, untouchable and easy, and she envies it. As a model in her 20s, she had a taste of that privilege. Now pushing 40, she knows that to have one kind of freedom, she must sacrifice another.
Muna began her treacherous journey two years ago. Then, she was a family of three. Now her mother and younger brother are buried somewhere at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. She's been granted asylum, but she can't shake the feeling that she will never belong. When your only family is a stack of passport photos, it's hard to grow new roots.
In search of escape, these three women find themselves in Stockholm, a city that prides itself on being egalitarian and open. Instead of a fresh new start, they find the same problems just wear a different name.
Critic reviews
"A sharply written story with messy, deeply moving characters, raising brutal questions and steering clear of easy answers." (Taylor Jenkins Reid, best-selling author of Daisy Jones and the Six)
"These characters will pull at your heartstrings." Nicole Dennis-Benn, best-selling author of Here Comes the Sun and Patsy)
"A sexy, surprising, searing debut about love, loss, desire and the many dimensions of Black womanhood. Timely and terrific!" (Deesha Philyaw, award-winning author of The Secret Life of Church Ladies)

If you’re Yoruba this narrator will make you flinch!
KEMI deserved a lot better, I’m genuinely disappointed at the poor narration for her character and the terrible pronunciation of Yoruba phrases. I’m surprised I even made it to the end of the book because it was just terrible to listen to.
On another note I did enjoy the story, but overall the narration was shambolic.

Great read. it's so vividly told
The characters are very relatable. I loved them. I was sad for them when they were sad, I was happy when they had little victories🥰

Great story, slightly let down by the performance
Really loved how the story enfolded. was distracted however by the lack of effort taken to learn how to pronounce the Nigerian names given they were of the main characters.

Good story with relevant themes explored
Good story and effective build up of the plot. I love the progressive development of the individual stories and how the individual strands build up to a climax. After the climax however, the book seemed to lose steam. The strength of the plot suddenly dissipates leaving the reader in unexpected limbo, like an unfinished sentence without a coma or a full stop.
Narration: Is it so difficult to find a narrator who can speak or pronounce Yoruba properly?

Two voice actors - great experience with one con
I loved the story but hated the lack of cultural awareness, especially around the names of the twins and phrases that if said correctly would have made it an entirely riveting experience. That took a big part away from me but everything else was great.
