Summary

Yeonmi Park was not dreaming of freedom when she escaped from North Korea. She didn't even know what it meant to be free. All she knew was that she was running for her life, that if she and her family stayed behind they would die - from starvation or disease or even execution.

This book is the story of Park's struggle to survive in the darkest, most repressive country on Earth; her harrowing escape to South Korea through China's underworld of smugglers and human traffickers; and her emergence as a leading human rights activist - all before her 21st birthday.

Excellent and fascinating

Among the biographies and non fictions audiobooks I have listened to this is one of the best although I did have some difficulty with the reader whose accent was rather pronounced. One does get used to the voice and then the story is quite gripping and very surprising. This young woman is ambitious and admirable and I would recommend the book to anybody who is interested in North Korea and the effects of extreme communism on the human psyche. My recommendation is don't be put off by the reader and if you persist you will learn much that is both surprising and appalling.

An eye opening story

Truly an amazing story to listen too, 5 stars easily. It will have you hooked from the very beginning, it's shows the true joys and horrors of life. That some people have to go through on a daily basis. I love this book and will highly recommend it.

This book should be mandatory reading in schools.

This book is incredible, and a window into the real world we ignore every day, and focus on new phones, reality TV and other pointless things.

Heartwrenching story

Sad but real for those in North Korea. The poverty inflicted on the people and cruelty of this regime result in such desperation that life becomes worth risking for food and freedom.

Stunning

This book is utterly fascinating and at times you have to pause to reconcile with the fact this woman lived it. She has so much strength it’s truly humbling. A must-read.

A Must Read into North Korea.

Was recommended via a YouTube video, an interesting and thought provoking listen. To think I'm of similar age, and how her life growing up was 10 times harder, I count my lucky stars to have had a very comfortable upbringing.
