Der englische Buchhändler David Tristram besucht seinen Freund Sherlock Holmes im südfranzösischen Montpellier, wo dieser abseits der Großstadthektik seinen chemischen Experimenten nachgeht. Gemeinsam statten sie einem Antiquariat in Nîmes einen Besuch ab. Dort ist Holmes nämlich keine geringere Lektüre als das Tagebuch seiner Großmutter angeboten worden. Doch der Besitzer des Manuskrips, ein Anwalt, wird in Paris ermordet aufgefunden. Holmes und Tristram reisen daraufhin in die Hauptstadt, finden aber keine Spur des Tagebuchs im Nachlass des Opfers.
