About this listen

On Mother's Day, 1985, the bodies of Kathryn Eastburn and her two young daughters were found in their Fayetteville, North Carolina, home. Katie, an air force captain's wife, had been raped and stabbed to death. Kara and Erin's throats had been slit. Their toddler sister, Jana, was the only survivor of a bloody killing spree that terrified a community still reeling from the conviction, six years prior, of Dr. Jeffrey MacDonald for the savage slayings of his pregnant wife and two daughters.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Department soon focused its investigation on US Army soldier Tim Hennis. Detectives and local prosecutors built their case on circumstantial evidence and a jury convicted Hennis and sentenced him to death. But his defense team refused to give up. Piece by piece, they discredited the state's case, exposing false testimony, concealed evidence, and prosecutorial misconduct. At a second trial, Hennis was found not guilty and released from death row.

But an even more stunning turn of events was yet to come. Twenty-five years after the murders, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation tested a crucial piece of DNA evidence from the crime scene. The shocking results led to an unprecedented third trial to determine Tim Hennis's guilt or innocence.

Innocent victims

Really enjoyed this book. It is outrageous that some of the evidence has never been tested since DNA has evolved if there is a chance that TH is innocent it should be checked

Confusion and cockup?

Wow! What a fascinating and terrible story. I recall a documentary from many years ago that had the temerity to pose questions about the golden bullet that is DNA and in my mind this case certainly asks questions also. if, as we have been led to believe since the 1980s DNA is transferred by EVERY contact , how was the murder scene cleared of any evidence of the suspect and how come no evidence of the victims was found in the suspects car or home ? Fascinating nd very worrying.

Great listen, sad end

Really enjoyed this one, it’s scary how the judicial system can work at times. I would like to think he will get another chance to prove his innocence.

Excellently recounted

If you like court room scenarios then this is for you. Very well told with no audio issues, I was hooked from the opening lines having not expected very much. A tale that will have you punching the air in triumph and putting your head in your hands with despair. A rollercoaster.

A roller coaster like no other!

I read at keast 2 audiobooks per week and have done for over a decade. this is probably the most gripping read to date. They say truth is stranger than fiction..Well this book ultimately proves the point. I've never been so engrossed, gripped and ultimately shocked by a story. The author has nailed the genre in this book. I actually felt like I was there throughout the novel. The narrator was phenomal! bravo!!

Superb!

Incredible story, all of which was new to me. One of the best true crime books I’ve encountered. Narration is good, too. My head is still spinning trying to make sense of the various outcomes.

Shocked!

It was a bit of a struggle at times to keep track of everything but I thoroughly enjoyed this read. I’m shocked that such a thing can happen with forensics the way they are today and totally disgusted that this poor man and his families lives continue to be destroyed by this calamity! Can’t share more without spoiling the end…. It sure did open my eyes up further to the world we live in today!

Great Listen but worrying outcomes

I was really gripped by this audio account. However I am shocked by all the deceit and coverups by the prosecution to get the result they wanted, and also by the army's ability to give him a fair trial. Totally disgusted by all the shenanigans and so sorry for Tim
