No stranger to fear since meeting the unhuman Inspector Hobbes, Andy Caplet fears getting fired from his reporting job (again). His main concern, though, is a shady property developer who has designs on Sorenchester Common, and more annoyingly on his wife.

Perhaps a trip to the mountains will help him relax, but this proves even more perilous with foul weather, inedible food, brigands, and a terrifying cruise. Fortunately, mountain leopards, Yetis and Flossy, the yak, take a shine to Andy.

Back in the Cotswolds, a child gets murdered and a new detective takes on the case. When Hobbes returns, he (with Andy’s dubious assistance) is relegated to hunting an enormous bird with killer feet. Meanwhile, Andy still worries about the common and the reclusive Common People (surely not Yetis?), who will lose their homes if the housing development goes ahead.

This is the fifth in Wilkie Martin’s unhuman series of cozy comedy crime fantasies.

I love this series of books by Wilkie Martin.
Inspector Hobbes , Andy and the rest of the characters so brilliantly brought to life by the magnificent narration of Tim Campbell.

It was fun to join these characters again as they went on a hilarious journey into the mountains. Andy gets up to his usual extreme clumsiness. Hobbes is a big efficient inspector who susses out the little mystery of the common people. Another cotswolds misadventure with new dastardly and weird characters to add to the town kerfuffles.

So glad to see another instalment out on audible. Absolutely love this series of books. And the narrator is hysterical in his depictions (apart from the Liverpudlian accent lol but that is a tricky one to master)
5 stars! Bravo! Fingers crossed there’s more to come.

Tin Campbell really makes the Inspector Hobbs' characters come alive. I will look for more titles that he has narrated while I wait impatiently for more from Wilkie Martin.

I really enjoy these books, story lines, characters and superb narration.
However in this one I was finding Andy a lot too much until the latter chapters. Anyway I would recommend these books, they are a delightful escape!

I love this series - and will continue to look forward to each new book but the narrators pronunciation of certain vowels is quite the strangest thing I’ve ever heard and distracts me. ‘Thought’ is ‘thot’, ‘broad’ is ‘brod’ to mention just a few. Once I heard him say ‘thoughtless’ normally so it is some kind of affectation for some unknown reason but I wish he wouldn’t do it. Distracting, annoying and stupid.

Great series but weird narration

I think the book should have been titled Hapless Andy and the common people. Hobbes is there for the finale but generally just puts in fleeting appearances that act as a palate cleanser from the interminable bumbling of Andy.
The balance of Hobbes/Andy seems off from the other books and by the end I was beginning to hate a character, Andy, that I once enjoyed.
Maybe this book just isn’t as good as the others and I missed the variety that characters like Mrs Goodfellow brought to the other books. The narration was still excellent even if I felt let down by the book.
