About this listen

Scions have no limits. Scions do not die. And Scions do not disappear.

Sergeant Ted Regan has a problem. A son of one of the great corporate families, a Scion, has gone missing at the front. He should have been protected by his Ironclad - the lethal battle suits that make the Scions masters of war - but something has gone catastrophically wrong.

Now Regan and his men, ill-equipped and demoralised, must go behind enemy lines, find the missing Scion and uncover how his suit failed. Is there a new Ironclad killer out there? And how are common soldiers, lacking the protection afforded the rich, supposed to survive the battlefield of tomorrow?

A stand-alone audiobook by the Arthur C Clarke Award-winning author of Children of Time.

Boardroom / Warroom

Loved the connection of powers and the disregard for the people affected getting their opportunity, willingly or unwillingly, to restore balance

Short, snappy, great fun.

Well paced, great narration and a credible snapshot of a near future in which giant multinationals are more powerful than governments.

Awesome!

I like the author, starting to be one of my favorites and this book makes it even easier to say that he is indeed one of the best.
Initially i was out off by the length but it was a real supervise to find that size is not that important. (heh)
I have listened to books twice the length that did not feel that complete and did not capture my attention as much.
This is a complete story, nothing missing and i do not feel like there is anything to add.
I would love to see more in this universe.

On the story itself, i loved the difference between the 2 continents,
It reminded me of the older Sci-Fi movies but brought up to current days.

A great book and definitely recommend.

Poor narration.

I think I would have really liked the story if the narration hadn’t spoiled it.

Excellent futuristic war story.

Great if you're a fan of military sci-fi, suspence and plot twists. Really well done.

Has some Excellent moments

The cover art, blurb and title gives the impression Ironclads is a steam/dieselpunk adventure. However it's actually a rather hellish, dystopian near future yarn, jam-packed with well staged action and wry social comment. Despite being pretty short, the story does sag towards the end, but for the most part it's a pretty compelling listen.

One major gripe is the narration, I've heard Peter Noble before and he's excellent, but a whole novel in a fake American accent? why not just hire an American? Didn't bother me too much, but it may some. Listen to the sample first!

Enjoyable, but nothing too surprising

An interesting world with great characters, brought to life by a very strong performance. The story is a little uninspired, but it's fun in an 80s action movie way.

Get your kind in the right place for it

This is quite short so as others have suggested maybe best as part of a 2for1 deal. It's also quite silly and you'll not get a unique or very original tale but it is fun.

The other comments that this is reminiscent of 80s action films are on the mark. This is over the top, over blown and over earnest. The commentary preformance is the same and it fits the story well but you need to accept this as the pulp schlock story that it is

Fun listen between longer books

Good story and world building, a nice breather book between longer novels and series that an average listener can finish in a few days. The world built by Tchaikovsky is interesting and would like to see a few more stories in this universe.

The narrator is a bit grating in the beginning but honestly the style kind of grew on me. Overall would recommend although maybe try to get it on a deal as it is quite short.

Not bad but doesn’t really go anywhere

I appreciated the commentary on capitalism but the actual story was fairly bland. Didn’t feel invested in the characters or the world. The voice chosen for the main character was a little grating and one of the secondary characters was a Christopher Walken impression. Otherwise the performance was good.
