Summary

Hilarious from time to time
I deliberately choose modern French audiobooks, because I want to keep my French language skills current, so from that point of view, this book fitted the bill perfectly. However... it took me a long time to get into it. This was firstly because the narrator doesn't speak very clearly, and secondly because of the amount of slang. Once I got used to the narrator's style (which I came to enjoy - it did fit the main character), and accepted that a fair bit of the humour would go over my head because I missed the nuances, things got much better. I found the premise of the story a bit shaky, but I guess this was just a means to an end, because the point of this book is to philosophise on the flaws in our self-obsessed, materialistic modern society. But the shallowness of the storyline didn't really complement the depth of the message, and I found the secret admirer thing frankly creepy. However, there were plenty of laugh out loud moments, and it was reassuring to learn that modern French society is as screwed up as modern British society, and I learned a plenty of slang I didn't know before! I'm not sure I would wholeheartedly recommend the book - I certainly wouldn't recommend it as a first foray into French audible - but it definitely had its moments!
