About this listen

This classic introduction to the psychology of Carl Gustav Jung is important because it is the only English original text he sanctioned in his lifetime. In his personal foreword, he wrote: 'Mrs Frieda Fordham has undertaken the by no means easy task of producing a readable resumé of all my various attempts at a better and more comprehensive understanding of the human psyche. She has delivered a fair and simple account of the main aspects of my psychological work. I am indebted to her for this admirable piece of work.'

Originally issued in 1953, this Introduction immediately became the standard first step for those eager to understand the varied work and thought of this remarkable man. Mrs Fordham explains her reason for attempting the work. She wrote: 'Most people have heard of the late C. G. Jung, often linking him vaguely with Sigmund Freud; and although the terms 'complex', 'introvert', and 'extravert' are often used in everyday speech, few realise they were coined by him. Jung’s influence has been far-reaching, touching many of the human sciences, and his ideas have proved of value in such widely differing fields as biology and theology. Many of his writings are technical, and even those of a general nature often appear somewhat obscure, but they contain a core of significance for everyone. This book aims at revealing this core to the reading public in language which is easily comprehensive and yet does not do violence to the subtlety and creative genius of one of the greatest modern psychologists.'

I have been through Carl Jungs books in detail and this is a good introduction. If you are looking for an introduction to Jung you might consider man and his symbols.

I liked the narration particularly

One of the best introduction books I've read/listened to. Thorough while being totally accessible to a newbie to psychology. Achieves its purpose of taking the fear out of reading Jung and leaves you wanting more. Beautifully read at the perfect pace.

One of my favourite buys of the year

After struggling with understanding the Jung's literature, listening to this introduction I finally am able to have a general picture of his psychology. I would continue his book to dig dipper!

A must for the beginning

Having Jung's own endorsement, Fordham systematic survey of his work carries almost unique authority.
Little wonder. What a novice might overwhelming or confusing in engaging with the source writings is here rendered clear and accessible, so that the listener feels prepared and inspired to press forward and begin their own engagement with the master.
And what a master!
Here is the source of so much of the Applied Psychology from which we benefit practically in personal, social, workplace and forensic contexts today. In my view, Fordham should be required reading in any Psychology 101 course. I am mystified as to why struggle to find a printed copy.
I am also grateful for the presentation. Ms Lloyd does great service in providing the balance between dispassionate discussion of high concept and empathetic treatment of biographical narrative, both of Jung himself and of the case studies adduced.
Thoroughly well-balanced and satisfying. I have no doubt that I shall return to it repeatedly.

An Admirable Synthesis - why is it not in print?

A great first step into Jung’s psychology. Very compelling and engaging narrative, full of clear pointers towards which parts of his work to explore next depending on your interest.

Essential introduction to Jung

A wonderfully concise and illuminating overview of Jung’s life and work and the only one, in English, that he personally sanctioned. The reader is excellent.

Perfect Introduction to Jung!

One of the most enjoyable books I have listened to recently. You have to focus a bit to understand it but it felt like a very rewarding experience

Brilliant book

This was the first book I've read/listened to from/on Jung. It's a brilliant place to stay and I'm eager now to read something he himself has written.

A great place to stay with Jung
