Summary

Featured in the Zoe Ball book club on ITV.

An assassin’s bullet. A deadly conspiracy. But who is calling the shots?

When an attempted assassination sparks a chain reaction of explosive events across London, Britain’s elite security forces seem powerless to stop the chaos threatening to overwhelm the government.

As the dark and deadly conspiracy unfolds, three strangers find their fates entwined: Joe Dempsey, a deadly military intelligence officer; Sarah Truman, a CNN reporter determined to get her headline; and Michael Devlin, a Belfast-born criminal barrister with a secret past.

As the circle of those they can trust grows ever smaller, Dempsey, Devlin and Truman are forced to work in the shadows, caught in a life-or-death race against the clock, before the terrible plot can consume them all.

Another Simon Kernick

Superb storyline, not predictable and has enough twists. Well narrated too. Hopefully more like this to follow?

Pulsating from start to finish

There are so many strong characters throughout this terrific thriller. Action rebounds off every page.
Anyone who loves a political adventure mixed with daring action packed adventure will lap up this first class novel.
Five stars is the least this author deserves for a classic modern day story.

High octane British political romp!

Chanced upon this debut novel by an author new to me in the Plus Catalogue.
It's one political conspiracy thriller that actually thrills as it romps along at a fast pace.
At an event in Trafalgar Square to honour military servicemen, a highly skilled mercenary sniper takes out a security agent allowing an improbable looking gunman who seems to have missed his target, a former US president, to assassinate a British member of parliament instead. The perpetrator is instantly apprehended by seasoned specialist operative Joe Dempsey, meaning sniper 'Joshua' fails to silence his second target, so a scheme years in the planning starts to go array. Taken to a London Police station, the prisoners soon dead, but not before he's spoken to a lawyer, who in turn calls his friend criminal barrister Michael Devlin. Within hours there's a fatal car accident, Joshua's work, and soon he's pursuing Devlin & a CNN reporter who also knows a little too much. Meanwhile Dempsey recognises the hit-man's handiwork, realises there's a cover-up of the facts & suspicious investigates.
Bucking the trend to make foreign religious factions the terrorists, this novel returns to Ireland where despite the 'Troubles' deemed settled by a peace accord, unrest can be easily manipulated for political gain. And, in the end that's at the root of the story; one man's ruthless ambition to bring down a PM who's seen as soft on terrorism & place himself in power; he's flagged fairly early on as the villain.

Brillant

Loved every second of the book. Peter Noble did the story justice and I believed in the characters and the arc of the story. Downloaded the second book. They’ve changed the narrator and it doesn’t work. I know how the characters sound and this is not it. Sent it back, sorry.

Good but a little predictable

I enjoyed listening to it and it was well performed but the female characters lacked depth and the story was a little predictable. All in all worth listening to.

Towser T

Good storyline, well narrated, with a lot of action. I enjoyed it enough to order another Tony Kent novel. It was well constructed and moved at a good pace. I enjoyed the crime/politics angle and would certainly recommend it. The narrator was first class and differentiated his voice sufficiently to delineate the different characters.
