About this listen

Unaware of the wider Heresy and following the Warmaster's increasingly cryptic orders, Roboute Guilliman returns to Ultramar to muster his Legion for war against the orks massing in the Veridian system.

Without warning, their supposed allies in the Word Bearers Legion launch a devastating invasion of Calth, scattering the Ultramarines fleet and slaughtering all who stand in their way. This confirms the worst scenario Guilliman can imagine - Lorgar means to settle their bitter rivalry once and for all. As the traitors summon foul daemonic hosts and all the forces of Chaos, the Ultramarines are drawn into a grim and deadly struggle in which neither side can prevail.

Best in the series so far

Favourite of mine by some distance. The second person narration is weird but works quite well here.

Very good description of how to kill a planet...
This book is worth it for the description of an orbital collision and the subsequent debris fall alone it's stunning
Most know Abnett is a reliably good author in the 40K universe and this is another great piece of work. I'll be honest, while I don't dislike Armstrong as a narrator he isn't my favourite but forget that cos in this book he really pitches it perfectly. It's an excellent combination.

Not bad, not perfect.

The over all story is told in a lot of different segments. As in you jump around between quite a few characters. Some are just around for a short segment, others you come back to. Closer you get to the end of the book more focused it gets.

I get why they told the story in this way, but it can seem a bit jarring at times, and take you out of it now and again.

Outstanding story, and incredibly well read

Dan Abnett’s dialogue and combat scenes are always fantastic, and there’s so much stuff packed in. Gareth Armstrong reads it really well, injects a load of drama into it.

Best one

I got goosebumps several times when listening to this amazing book. Got hooked from the start and was more exciting than anything else I’ve read.

The Ultramarines are finally dealt with

Another incredibly high quality work from Dan Abnett, dealing with one of the most infamous acts of the Heresy. As always, wonderfully narrated.

exciting and dramatically read but repetitive

like all black library content it leans heavily on the use of in-universe jargon. expect to hear much of "mass reactive rounds" "rockcrete" "plasteel" and others. otherwise great fun

One of the best Horus Heresy books hands down

Love this book so much. I have listened to it 3 times over the last 2 years and will likely listen again next year! the voice actor is excellent, his voices for the characters are great and easily distinguishable which can be difficult. Highly recommend

blown away

in my humble opinion this is some of Dan Abnetts work, with fantastic narration from my now favourite narrator of the Horus Heresy books. I'm a stalwart word bearers fan and can't stand the Smurfs but still loved this book!
