Jai ha nove anni, va pazzo per i dolci, ama i telefilm polizieschi e vive in un basti, lo slum di una megalopoli indiana. Nello stesso quartiere abitano anche i suoi due migliori amici: Pari e Faiz.
I tre hanno imparato presto a cavarsela da soli, e quando un ragazzo della loro classe scompare, nel totale disinteresse della polizia, si improvvisano detective. Il basti, intanto, precipita nella paura, e subito riaffiorano le antiche divisioni tra indù e musulmani, con i politici pronti a soffiare sul fuoco.
Così, mentre gli adulti si dimostrano, come spesso accade, irresponsabili, a cercare la verità rimangono solo Jai e i suoi compagni, che però dovranno spingersi ben oltre ciò che avevano immaginato.
