En el verano de 1959 Joyce Haney, una ama de casa con dos hijas pequeñas, desaparece sin dejar rastro. La primera en llegar a la casa y darse cuenta de su ausencia es su asistenta del hogar, Ruby Wight, quien, por ser afroamericana, es inmediatamente detenida como sospechosa, en lugar de como testigo.
