About this listen

Sometimes the biggest story of your life happens before you’re even born… and sometimes, you get to discover it. One email is all it takes to turn Mala’s life upside down… an email from a stranger 10,000 miles away. Now, as memories from her childhood swirl up in familiarity, she sees them in a different light, as though they’re puzzle pieces that have a new way to fit together. Everything is the same, yet everything is different… The story she thought she knew is true, but there’s been another truth running beneath it the whole time. At 53 years old, Mala didn’t think she had anything new to learn about her past, but now she sees just how much information she’s been missing. She has a decision to make: Will she meet Sakura, the face behind the email, or will she go on pretending that there are no missing pieces in the story of her life? As she wrestles with her decision, we’re taken back in time to 1972 and the story of Aunty Helen, Uncle Peter, and the secret child they must decide what to do with… a story that has had more of an effect on Mala’s life than she’s ever known. When we make sense of the past, we begin to make sense of ourselves, and Mala’s in for a huge voyage of discovery… and maybe, a whole new chapter of her life.

Thought I knew where this was going, but it cuts deeper. Messy in a good way. There's tension, old wounds, and the kind of silence between characters that says more than words. The “plan” and the “dream” clash in painful, believable ways.

I went in thinking this would be your typical romance drama, but it had way more depth than I thought. The twist with the secret child totally caught me off guard, in a good way. The characters felt real, like people I’ve known, and their struggles actually got to me. I finished it in two sittings because I had to know how it ended.

What I liked about the premise is how it highlights that sometimes, the biggest truths about our lives are hidden from us, even if they've been unfolding beneath the surface all along. Mala's situation, where she thought she knew everything about her past but then realizes there are huge missing pieces, feels very relatable.

I didn’t expect to get emotional, but this one got me. The shift between present and past was done in a way that felt natural, not forced. I kept thinking about how small choices ripple out—we don’t always get the full story growing up. There was a moment toward the end that made me sit there in silence for a bit. If you’ve ever wondered what you don’t know about your own family, this one hits close. Definitely stayed with me after.

An emotionally rich story about love, identity, and the fragile nature of dreams when life takes an unexpected turn. The plot follows Mala, a woman with big hopes for the future, and a man with a careful plan, both shaken by the sudden revelation of a secret child. The characters are deeply relatable, and their emotional journey feels honest and raw. The author skillfully weaves themes of legacy, sacrifice, and resilience into a narrative that’s both heart-wrenching and hopeful. While the pacing slows in parts, the emotional payoff and thought-provoking twists make this a memorable and rewarding read. For anyone who enjoys stories about life’s unexpected challenges and the strength it takes to navigate them.

I really enjoyed Labyrinth of Dreams. The characters pulled me in right away, especially with how their goals and feelings clashed and connected. The secret child twist added real tension and kept me listening to find out how it would all play out. The pacing was great, and the emotional moments felt honest without being too dramatic. If you like romance with a bit of suspense and strong character development, this is a great pick.
