About this listen

Read by Samuel West, known for his roles in Van Helsing and Notting Hill.

Last Bus to Woodstock is the novel that began Colin Dexter's phenomenally successful Inspector Morse series.

'Do you think I'm wasting your time, Lewis?'
Lewis was nobody's fool and was a man of some honesty and integrity.
'Yes, sir.'
An engaging smile crept across Morse's mouth. He thought they could get on well together . . .

The death of Sylvia Kaye figured dramatically in Thursday afternoon's edition of the Oxford Mail. By Friday evening Inspector Morse had informed the nation that the police were looking for a dangerous man – facing charges of wilful murder, sexual assault and rape.

But as the obvious leads fade into twilight and darkness, Morse becomes more and more convinced that passion holds the key . . .

Last Bus to Woodstock is followed by the second Inspector Morse book, Last Seen Wearing.

Not aged well

I am a great admirer of Samuel West as narrator, and of the TV Morse. But the book itself hasn't aged well. Morse comes across as a priapic dinosaur, nor redeemed by any indication that his views are not those of the author. I will try another, but will probably go back to watching Morse rather than reading/listening to the books.

Perfect narration

Hurrah! At last narrator who reads intelligently and doesn’t put on silly voices for different characters

Beautifully read

At last I’ve found a series I can listen to. Sam West is a tremendous reader and makes listening a delight.
Whilst Colin Dexter’s writing hasn’t aged well societally, the plot twists stand the test of time.
As a Morse, Lewis and especially Endeavour fan, I relished listening and visualising the story. Reserved for night time, episodes segued in to the day so I’m now already into the second book. This is going to get expensive!

Weird dated comments about women!

It’s the first Morse I’ve listened to. I’ll give more a go as I enjoy a good detective story, but I found the comments about women, especially after getting raped, very bizarre, even given when it was written. I don’t approve of rewriting books but it was heavy going.
As for the story, without giving anything away, I know it’s often the least likely person but…what??? The characterisation of the perpetrator was all wrong. Novelists should be psychologists, the other characters were fairly filled out but the person in question, who had to be at least a narcissist if not a downright psychopath, didn’t think the way either of those do in any way, shape or form.
