About this listen
Winner of the August Derleth award, Last Days is a chilling and terrifying novel from master of horror Adam Nevill.
The Temple of the Last Days. The brutal cult with a history of murder, sex and occult dealings destroyed itself during one night of ritualistic violence decades ago. Or so they thought....
Kyle Freeman is an indie filmmaker with no money and few options, so when he lands a commission to make a documentary about The Temple of the Last Days he jumps at the chance. Little does he know that his investigation into the cult's bloody history will lead him into the darkest places he's ever been. As they travel from London and France to Arizona tracing the path of the cult, uncanny events, out-of-body experiences, ghastly artefacts and visits by the merciless 'old friends' plague Kyle and his one-man crew. They soon discover the power of the cult's terrible legacy and that it may be too late for them to escape....

“His previous novel was the superb The Ritual, but with Last Days he's gone one better. This is riveting, and Nevill is fast becoming Britain's answer to Stephen King.” (The Guardian)
“Taking its cue from real-life cults Last Days is an effectively creepy novel that will leave you sleeping with the lights on.” (SFX)

Enjoyable Adam Nevill!
Not as credible as The Ritual or Apartment 16 but enjoyable none the less!

Epic!
God, this was so immersive! not only was it a feast of words that was so enjoyable to listen to; but it was epic in depth of story. I was bereft when it ended. This is a fantastic listen!

A bit long winded
A bit long winded for me. The story was good, ending was not my kind of thing.
First book I’ve not enjoyed on Audible, shame really as it could have be half the length and a good book.
But just my opinion.

Ruined by narrator
I really should have returned this but I was filled with ennui. The story is passable even if the characters have absolutely zero internal lives but the whole experience was ruined by the narrator. Everything from the nasal, thin tone of his voice to his utter inability to distinguish between the two lead characters; apparently a young film director and aged film producer can share the same exact voice. And I won't even go into his inability to pronounce certain words (listen to his 'raison d'etre) or terrible French... accent, if we're to call it that. I will have to make a note to check and avoid anything narrated by this person in future.

brilliant cult horror
There is a review for this book that slams the narrator. DO NOT LISTEN TO THAT REVIEW. The voice actor for this book is actually very good and jumps very well between accents and character voices.
Another great Book from this author, loved it.

Eerie, cult-centered horror that blurs the line between reality and the supernatural.
"We seem incapable of being led by any but the monstrous. The malignant narcissist. And there are many willing to take the place of a deposed tyrant, to ape them. And the rest of us, down here, cannot discriminate in the choice of our leaders, even if we have anything resembling a real choice. We cannot lead ourselves rationally or humanely or fairly, so we choose the most unscrupulous and egotistical to lead us. Into one war and one holocaust after another.”
Wow, that quote hits hard. Adam Nevill’s Last Days is scary. Slow-burning and full of dread, it draws clear inspiration from real-life cults like the Manson Family and Jonestown. By leaning into found-footage horror Nevill creates an immersive, unsettling, and almost cinematic experience. The novel’s atmosphere is one of creeping unease, where even the most mundane settings are imbued with a sense of lingering evil. The horror elements range from psychological terror to full-blown supernatural grotesquery, with eerie, otherworldly entities that feel truly menacing.
Our protagonist Kyle’s descent into paranoia feels organic, making the supernatural elements hit even harder. However, the novel does sag in places, with some sections feeling repetitive as Kyle moves from one haunted location to the next.
Despite this, Last Days delivers a satisfying mix of investigative horror and occult terror, culminating in a nightmarish finale that will linger with readers. Eerie, cult-centered horror that blurs the line between reality and the supernatural, Last Days is well worth a read, and my favourite of Nevill’s books I’ve read so far.
