About this listen
Dr. Emily Hartford is back in Chicago, ready to move forward and leave the past behind, until an unexpected request for help sends her deep into an investigation—and into the path of a killer.
Seventeen months after the Parkman case, Dr. Hartford has returned to Chicago to finish her surgical residency. But when she is contacted out of the blue by Solange McClelland, the only survivor of a decade-old triple homicide, Emily is compelled to dig deeper. She doesn’t know the details of the event but remembers it as one of the few cases her deceased father never solved.
On her thirtieth birthday, Solange opens a long-forgotten safe-deposit box and is entirely baffled by what she finds. Inside are not only painful reminders of a once-happy youth but almost four million dollars—enough to pursue and finally solve the mystery of who brutally murdered her family. It’s been over ten years, and Solange has built a new life in Detroit with her husband, Joseph. But there are certain disturbing questions about her past that she is determined to answer. So she reaches out to the only one who might know something about her family’s deaths and their possibly erroneous death certificates—Dr. Hartford, the daughter of Freeport’s former medical examiner.
Finding it impossible to believe that her scrupulous father made a mistake, Emily joins Solange’s pursuit of the truth, and as subzero temperatures blanket snow-covered Michigan, the two women pursue justice in two very different ways. But lurking nearby in the frigid cold is a crafty, unrepentant killer, determined to finish what he started long ago.

Gripped from the start
Brilliant story and the narrator did an excellent job of bringing to life. I so hope there will be another one this year

Delivery was very slow
The constant hushed tones of the performance and the slow delivery really spoiled a good story. I don't recall that from the earlier books

I enjoyed the reader very much
Enjoyed the whole series and the way the books are written and read. I like that it’s the same reader throughout the series.

Worth a listen
Story line about rookie Agent being sent to China undercover on first assignment not believable, otherwise story line follows regular pattern. Worth listening to.

Another great story
Another great storyline from this author and has left me hanging on for the next book.
Sadly, I found the narrator was somewhat lacking in expression ; this may in part be due to an accent which is unfamiliar to me, however I really feel that for me at least more intonation would have increased the suspense and drama of certain passages which unfortunately in this case were particularly lacklustre and monotone in their delivery.

Strong main character,
Another fantastic story from JGD! This goes to much darker places then the first two books and there are sections that shouldn’t be listened to just before bed time!!
Once again Emily is sucked into a ‘cold case’ - this time by the remaining member of a family who had all died. Can Emily work out what really happened? Oh course she can!! (Not really a spoiler, honest!).
This is a story that you think about when you are going about your day - it lingers with you as you wonder what the characters are getting up to.
The Emily/Brandon/Nick story continues.
Now when can I start the sequel?!!

Best yet!
I’ve enjoyed all the Emily Hartford books but this one is next level. Lots of tension and plenty of drama and action as well as emotional connection.
