Summary

A crippled cargo ship drifts helplessly in the face of an oncoming hurricane-force storm. On board, a passenger whose presence means the world is watching. Only the skill, determination and raw courage of a lifeboat crew and the British military forces despatched to save them offer any hope of survival. But set against the savagery of the Atlantic even that might not be enough....

They that go down to the sea in ships

or "little boats paid for by donations", or fly over it in search and rescue operations, a Storm, and Murphy. Lots of Murphy.
I first read this story in paperback from the Library (I was still reading at 02.00 the next morning) got it out a time or two more, picked up a copy 2nd hand and am now really glad to have the electronic and audio versions. l like it that much - it's about people and courage in the sort of situation that gives me nightmares.
When you've listened, go on the RNLI website to see the videos. And leave a donation to help with another little boat and those who crew her.

Story telling at its best

... however it IS a bit technical for anyone who isn’t nautically knowledgable. But this one of the reasons why it’s so authentic

A full five star read

Like the ocean swells, this one rises above the rest. I was drawn into the action so deeply, I feel exhausted now it’s finished!

Peerless performance

It took me an hour or so to get into this but I’m glad I stayed with it. The technical detail is incredible and the characters really come to life. Such a simple premise but plenty of twists and turns.
The vocal performance is also stellar. As good as any other I have heard.
I was very sad to learn the author has passed away but pleased he has left a legacy of other books I will no doubt now go on to enjoy.

Gripping

A gripping listen, atmospheric and engrossing. Brilliantly narrated, really bringing the many different characters to life, loved it form start to end

Extraordinary story!

I now have renewed respect for the RNLI - what courage and what bravery, an amazing a story. Incredibly exciting, I lost hours of sleep as it was impossible turn it off. Masterly narration by John Telfer. Can't wait to listen to more by Mike Lunnon wood.

The best audible book!!

The story is incredible and I shed a tear near the end. Very well performed and captures the mood brilliantly. The work in researching this must have been incredible. Having had Lee Child, Stephen Leather and Matthew Reilly I found this to be equally brilliant.

Brilliant

This took a while to get going, but once it did it was brilliant, so well was it narrated that I got so engrossed with the story I actually forgot it was fictional and was willing the characters to be rescued
Just a superb book

One word - brilliant!

One of THE best finds in Audible. Loved every single minute of the listen and ran the gamut of every emotion whilst doing so. Desperately wanted to speed it along to find out what happened whilst also desperate for it not to finish. I will listen to this again at some point (not done that before) but I’m the meantime, have bought the paperback for both my son and father to enjoy. Cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This story was quite emotional at times, both joyful and very sad.
