الكتاب هو مجموعة رسائل تحوى فلسفة خاصة من إنسان عاشق متيم ، يرى الجمال فى كل ما حوله. يخاطب الرافعي نفسه في هذا الكتاب على أسلوب (التجريد) فهو يزعم أنها رسائل صديق بعث بها إليه، فتراه يوجَّه الخطاب فيها إلى ذلك الصديق المجهول يستعينه على السلوان بالبث والشكوى، ثم يصطنع على لسان ذلك الصديق نتفًا من الرسائل يدير عليها إسلوبًا من الحديث في رسائله هو وما هناك من صديق ولا رسائل، إلا أن الرافعي ورسائله، يتحدث بها إلى نفسه عن حكاية حبه وآماله. إن الرافعي في هذه الرسائل جعل شيئًا مكان شيء فأنشأ هذه الرسائل لصاحبته، ثم نشرها كتابًا تقرؤه لتعلم من حاله ما لم تكن تعلمه ، أو ما يظن هو أنها لم تكن تعلمه؛ فهي رسائله إليها على أسلوب من كبرياء الحب ، تشقى ذات نفسه ولا تنال من كبريائه!
