About this listen
A taboo-busting, funny and poignant audiobook about choosing to have a baby by yourself.
When Liv Thorne was in her 20s, and single, she would joke to friends that if Mr Right didn't come along, she'd have to take matters into her own hands and have a child on her own. When she was still single in her 30s, it stopped being a joke and she started researching sperm banks and fertility clinics.
Liv's Alone is an honest and hopeful memoir that captures the joy and the challenge that is parenting alone by choice. From smashing the fairy tale story that we're fed from a young age and grieving the life you thought you were going to have, to buying sperm from Denmark and bringing a baby into the world, Liv guides listeners through the highs and lows with warmth, humour and understanding.
This audiobook is for anyone who might want to take charge of their parental destiny, learn more about modern families or want to be reassured that there is no right or wrong way to parent.

Narrated by the author, it is a frank and fearless account of her decision to become an “SMBC” (Single Mother By Choice), and the many hoops jumped through, procedures undergone, and tragedies and triumphs along the way.
I don’t want to spoil it, so won’t give too many details, but rest assured you will learn a lot of interesting things about fertility treatments, and where medical professionals ( as well as friends of those going through the process) can go terribly wrong, or wonderfully right.
It made me cry, chuckle, cry, belly laugh, cry, feel utter annoyance at humans, guffaw, happy cry and roar with laughter. All of those things - it was an utter joy to listen to.
I don’t have a particular interest in kids or the whole how-to-help-nature-along thing, but ordered this based on Liv’s Instagram posts, which are brilliant. If I, as a don’t-have-or-want-kids person can get so much out of it, I imagine that for anyone going through fertility treatment, or thinking about it, this will be like having a warm, honest and hilarious big sister holding your hand throughout.
Hilarious, then heart breaking, then hilarious again
