Anatole France (1844 - 1924), è stato uno scrittore francese, Premio Nobel per la letteratura nell'anno 1921.Nel 1896 iniziò a scrivere la Tetralogia della storia contemporanea, composto di quattro romanzi, di cui questo è il primo. I romanzi hanno per protagonista il signor Bergeret, modesto e disilluso, ma colto e arguto professore di un liceo di provincia, attraverso i cui occhi France descrive la società del suo tempo.
