About this listen

A love story, an adventure, and an epic of the frontier, Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, Lonesome Dove, is the grandest novel ever written about the last defiant wilderness of America.

Two retired Texas Rangers, Captains Woodrow Call and Augustus "Gus" McCrae, lead a cattle drive from the small town of Lonesome Dove to the unsettled Montana territories. On their grueling journey, they are joined by Joshua Deets, a Black scout and former Ranger, Jake Spoon, a fugitive, and Newt Dobbs, a 17-year-old boy who may have family ties to Call. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove will make listeners laugh and weep, dream and remember.

This remastered audio edition is expertly read by actor Lee Horsley, best known for his starring role in the television series Matt Houston.

Amazing

Just trust me and listen to this. It's a great story and the narration is perfect. I wish the same man had read the rest of the series!

Brilliant and One of a Kind

This story is so well told and appealing on many levels. I think it has probably spoiled to genre for me! I cannot think any other will come up to it. Even the later McMurtry (which chronologically precedes Dove) is nowhere near as good). Characters are memorable and well developed. Story is gripping, place is acutely described. An all round joy.

What an epic!

This was an absolute epic. The setting, the characters, the story. Its a journey through the old west and I love every minute of it. My only complaint, is this is a remaster of an older recording, and i found it either too quiet or too fast at times. But the story alone got me over these issues.

BEST BOOK EVER

Absolutely blown away. A new top five book of all time. Beautifully written, characters that make you invest in them so heavily you cannot stop listening. A wonderful yarn and beautifully narrated. Not my usual genre but I loved every minute of it and am so glad I listened to it. Amazing

Fantastic

Really great Western, genuinely funny and sad in parts. Great narration if a little dated by recording tech. Would recommend to anyone who loves an adventure and great characters.

Beautifully story beautifully told

I do enjoyed this Audible story, that, as it is very long, I decided to purchase a copy from here after my library loan ran out. So beautiful. I'm sure I will listen again one day...
