A sacred chalice leads to murder,
The Gyrth family had guarded the Chalice for hundreds of years. It was held by them for the Crown. Its antiquity, its beauty, the extraordinary legends that were connected with it, all combined to make it unique of its kind. It was irreplaceable. No thief could hope to dispose of it in the ordinary way. And indeed no ordinary thief would dream of trying. But there are others besides those who make their living by robbery, others whose immense wealth and passion for collecting render them less immune to the practical considerations that must guide even the less honestly minded citizens. These people cherish a desire to possess for their own private pleasure treasure that cannot be bought. And it was by this sort of person that the Chalice, and the lives and happiness of its guardians, were now threatened.
Margery Allingham was born in London in 1904. Her first novel was published when she was 17. In 1929 she published The Crime at Black Dudley and introduced the character who was to become the hallmark of her writing - Albert Campion

Spiffing good show, old boy!
Campion is by no means the archetype of the Golden Era of criminal fiction as the emphasis of Allingham's magnificent storytelling isn't whodunit. The great author thrillingly recounts escapades more akin to the work of John Buchan with a good deal more humour. Her stories lose nothing for the absence of trying to work out who, what, why, where and when. This is one of my favourite Allingham stories thus far - a great novel with a great narrator bringing a magnificent literary creation to blazing life.

Albert Campion, what a character!
Why I love the Albert Campion series of books:
1. I actually like Albert, who actually is he? He has so many facets to his character.
2. The books are well written with lots of character and background description, so much so I can picture it in my mind.
3. I look forward to finding out how the different characters develop and hearing their back stories, such as Lugg the old criminal.
4. They get you thinking, proper whodunnit's with plenty of red herrings.
5. As well as being mystery's, they also have humour.
6. David Thorpe's narration.
Until I chose my first Albert Campion book I was a huge fan of Agatha Christie, for the whodunnit style of writing. Like Agatha, Marjory Allingham is a mistress of suspense, but she also brings humour, and I find myself chuckling along with Albert like he is an old friend. The series of books are now part of my favourite library and I am already looking forward to hearing my next book.
I have to add, I don't know why some other reviews have been negative about David Thorpe's narration, I prefer him to Francis Matthews myself. For me, he 'gets' Albert's personality spot on. His voices for the various cast members are engaging. So please don't be put off by some of the other reviews, judge him for yourselves.

Great story, but not such good narration
Would you try another book written by Margery Allingham or narrated by David Thorpe?
Yes, I like the stories so much that even the mildly irritating narration doesn't put me off that much.

When the villain looked through the secret window
What didn’t you like about David Thorpe’s performance?
He made Campion sound like Bertie Whooster's aunt! Too trite and silly

Enjoyable but the narration is not the best

I would listen again in the hope of picking up something new.

You can see the characters of Campion and Lugg solidifying as Margery Allingham gained her stride.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Although consistent, his voice characterisations veer uncomfortably close to parody.
