About this listen

Ian Carmichael is Lord Peter Wimsey in these consummate BBC radio dramatisations of Dorothy L Sayers' much-loved mysteries.

Elegant, erudite and sharp-witted, aristocratic detective Lord Peter Wimsey featured in numerous novels and short stories by 'Queen of Crime' Dorothy L Sayers. These full-cast adaptations - first broadcast on BBC radio between 1975 and 1981 - are loved by mystery fans all around the world.

In The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club, when General Fentiman is found dead at his club, Wimsey suspects foul play. Could he have been murdered for his money?

Strong Poison introduces Harriet Vane - a crime novelist on trial for murdering her lover. Wimsey knows Harriet is no femme fatale but an innocent victim embroiled in a diabolical plot....

Five Red Herrings sees Peter faced with six men, all of whom have a motive for killing argumentative Scottish painter Sandy Campbell. But who was the culprit?

In Have His Carcase, when Harriet Vane finds a body on the beach with his throat cut, Lord Peter must work out whether it was murder or suicide.

These classic dramas, produced by Simon Brett (author of the Charles Paris series), also feature Peter Jones, Joan Hickson, Miriam Margolyes and Warren Clarke.

Interesting story that's brilliantly performed. it's so interesting listening to detective stories written so long ago, exploring different era.

brillant

This is the classic BBC version of these Golden Age who-dunnits: well interpreted and well-acted. BUT!
Some dodgy and careless editing by ? Final chapter missing of ‘The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club’, and some odd editing elsewhere.

Good, traditional version- badly edited.

These are brilliant dramatisations of the Lord Peter Wimsey stories. I highly recommend them and can't wait to listen to the next collection.

Thoroughly enjoyable collection of Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries. Ian Carmichael IS Lord Peter, there isn't anyone else who has the gravitas and panache to play him. It's also good to spot the (now) famous actors who play the characters in these dramatisation which some of which include Warren Clark, Nigel Stock and Patricia Routledge to name a few. If you want to escape from the day to day drudgery then give these collections a listen. Thoroughly recommended.

A Great Escape

Always well acted, with some of the stories better than others. An enjoyable listen overall.

Audible, it would be so helpful if the separate episodes could be listed (under chapters, for example). I find Five Red Herrings unutterably boring, and will always want to skip it. At present I have resorted to listening once and noting the timing of the episodes, so I can navigate past Five Red Herrings next time I listen. But this should not be necessary.

Another way of separating the episodes: put a bookmark at the start of each new episode, with a note giving its title.

Beautifully acted - as I listened, it was exactly like being in the story, and seeing all that the characters saw. Plus, Ian Carmichael is the only Lord Peter for me. Lastly, the music, which I love, set me hunting down where it comes from, and has now permanently revolutionised my Bluetooth listening habits!

Loved this!

This second volume lives magnificently up to the first, with bravura performances in the roles of Lord Peter, Bunter and Harriet Vane, beautifully supported by a range of superb character actors. On with volume three!

Far More than just Whimsy!

Ian Carmichael is brilliant as Lord Peter Wimsey. Great dramatization of the Dorothy L Sayers books. This features the following stories:- The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club, Strong Poison, Five Red Herrings & Have His Carcase. My favourite is Five Red Herrings. Great performances throughout by the actors.
