About this listen
Bryony Gordon presents the long-anticipated follow up to her phenomenal Number One Sunday Times Bestseller, Mad Girl.
Ten years on from first writing about her own experiences of mental illness, Bryony Gordon still receives messages about the effects it has on people. Now perimenopausal and well into the next stage of her life, parenting an almost-adolescent, just what has that help - and that connection with other unwell people - taught Bryony about herself, and the society we live in? What has she learned, and why have her views on mental health changed so radically? After coming out the other side of the biggest trauma of our living memory - a global pandemic - existing in a state of perma-crisis has now become our new normal.
From burnout and binge eating, to living with fluctuating hormones and the endless battle to stay sober, Bryony begins to question whether she got mental illness wrong in the first place. Is it simply a chemical imbalance, or rather a normal response from your brain telling you that something isn't right? Mad Woman explores the most difficult of all the lesson she's learned over the last decade - that our notion of what makes a happy life is the very thing that's making us so sad.

Descriptions of perimenopause diagnosis and help that some might find useful
Could do without the ultra annoying phone ringing sound effect - especially for those of us who use audiobooks as part of our sleep routine.

Funny, real and authentic
Wanting a break from my usual self development reads I opted for Mad Woman. I wasn’t disappointed. An excellent, insightful and well written book. Bryony offers a relatable, alternative and funny perspective to her mental health and perimenopause in the most entertaining way.
One of the best self development books I’ve read.

Probably the most important book I’ve EVER read
I’m not going to list likes or dislikes. It’s hard just to survive with OCD, depression, C-PTSD, ED - let alone ‘like’ them. Just thanks for making me feel just a little bit less alone and understood. As someone who has been through the mill with the NHS and hospitals, it only served to make me feel MORE weird, ashamed and alone. Who would have thought there were ‘others’ out there just like or at least similar to me and some of you are allowed to walk the earth without being locked up against your will?! I didn’t know that was a thing!! It still feels like when your Grannie used to talk, sorry I mean whisper, about “her down the road, who got pregnant without being married” and the ‘super supportive community’ they they all remember fondly, as long as you fit in - followed her around hitting her with birch twigs and shouting “shame”. Cheers Bryony and much love to anyone else that resonates with this story. We are stronger than we think. Battle on.

Pure, Raw,Authentic, honesty
Thankyou so much for telling your story in the most authentic manner as you have done with your previous books. this book is a tonic for isolation. In a world where so many live in a battlefield with their hormones, mental health and feeling misunderstood by others and themselves Bryony Gordon's mad woman is the hug you didn't think you needed.
As an author she is enable to capture the struggle so many of us woman or anybody with mental health issues have. she is able to tell her story without the painted on filter so many other books have done not to mention society in itself.
I commend her so much and hope to speak as honestly as she does so our struggles are heard and understood with much more compassion and ease in the future.
Most of all this book is about truly accepting ourselves as we are, because we are all trully unique and wonderful human beings
thankyou Bryony Gordon

She does it again
Bryony always gives us the raw unfiltered truth of living with mental illness but still has a compassion and warmth that exudes out of her writing that makes the listener feel less alone.
