About this listen

Light a fire they can't put out....

For 150 years, above the Scottish cliffs, Caldonbrae Hall has sat as a beacon of excellence in the ancestral castle of Lord William Hope. A boarding school for girls, it promises a future where its pupils will emerge 'resilient and ready to serve society'.

Rose Christie, a 26-year-old Classics teacher, is the first new hire for the school in more than a decade. At first, Rose feels overwhelmed in the face of this elite establishment, but soon after her arrival she begins to understand that she may have more to fear than her own ineptitude.

When Rose stumbles across the secret circumstances surrounding the abrupt departure of her predecessor - a woman whose ghost lingers over everything and who no one will discuss - she realises that there is much more to this institution than she has been led to believe.

As she uncovers the darkness that beats at the heart of Caldonbrae, Rose becomes embroiled in a battle that will threaten her sanity as well as her safety....

A brooding, mesmeric novel with a feminist kick, perfect for fans of Naomi Alderman, Madeleine Miller and Margaret Atwood.

Great performance of a thoroughly addictive read. I want to say one for those who love feminist dystopia but at times the direction the book takes feels darkly possible!! Riveting and delicious. Will definitely listen again!!

Delicious modern Gothic

Although I found it quite slow to start with I was glued to the book as it is so well written. It has also inspired me to revisit my Latin lessons!

Magnetic

Really enjoyed it. Surprising in parts, like a slow Bolero...feminist, Gothic, shades of Du Maurier.

Couldn't stop till finished.

BUT if you don't want to think of this book whenever you heard the word MADAM...I wouldn't listen/read it! I do understand the use of the word in this context, and as much as I did enjoy the book, I definitely wish it has been used less. Thats the only negative point from me. As for the rest, I really appreciate this author's imagination and story telling, and the narration was very good.

Great story

Good look. Class, power, and less than enlightened ways lead to clashes with a naive teacher and powerful people. Bit clichèd at times, but the narration is good

Gothic Hysteria

As a Classics teacher, I found so much to love in this. A recognizable depiction of boarding school life taken to the ultimate terrible extreme.

dystopian microcosm

whilst I enjoyed this, it felt a heavy and oppressive book which meant I was glad to finish it

quite dark and oppressive

Full disclosure, I DNF the book. With 5 hours still to go I honestly felt like life is too short! This book wants to be literary fiction - a kind of Dark Academia like Donna Tartt meets Margaret Atwood. Unfortunately it’s more YA beach read with lofty quotes thrown in to add ‘depth’. The author takes hours to set up what is bleeding obvious to all concerned and then proceeds to have the lead character whinge about it for the next few chapters. So dull!

Slow, laboured and obvious
