Summary
ALAN RICKMAN was one of the world-class actors of his generation, as well as a tireless political activist, an avid traveller and a devoted confidant and friend. Through his never-before-seen diaries – a twenty-five-year passion project – Rickman invites readers backstage and into his life.
A SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
Alan Rickman remains one of the most beloved actors of all time across almost every genre, from his breakout role as Die Hard’s villainous Hans Gruber to his heart-wrenching run as Professor Severus Snape, and beyond. His air of dignity, his sonorous voice and the knowing wit he brought to each role continue to captivate new audiences today. But Rickman’s artistry wasn’t confined to just his performances. Rickman’s writing details the extraordinary and the ordinary in a way that is anecdotal, indiscreet, witty, gossipy and utterly candid. He takes us behind the scenes on films and plays ranging from Sense & Sensibility, the Harry Potter series, Private Lives, My Name is Rachel Corrie and many more.
The diaries run from 1993 to his death in 2016 and offer insight into both a public and private life. Here is Rickman the consummate professional actor, but also the friend, the traveller, the fan, the director, the enthusiast: in short, the real Alan Rickman. Here is a life fully lived, all detailed in intimate and characteristically plain-spoken prose. Reading the diaries is like listening to Rickman chatting to a close friend.
Madly, Deeply also includes a foreword by Emma Thompson and a selection of Rickman’s early diaries, dating from 1974 to 1982, when his acting life first began.

Unexpectedly good
Despite it being what it says, a bunch of diary entries, I loved this. The entries themselves were individually pedestrian but the narration gave the effect of AR musing aloud

Gets better
It is a reading of diary entries. The first lot are brief and uninteresting but as it goes on he 'talks' to his diary more so it gets better.

A bit dreary
Bless Alan, I loved him as an actor, orator and philospher but this got a little tedious…. Better as the book with his superbly drawn pictures. Buy the book instead :)

What a story & a life!!!!
Thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. Brilliantly told by the readers. You get the story of a man living day by day but each day was not to be missed. He didn’t stop, much. Constantly working or going out to lavish events over the 20 years this story was written, Alan’s life had lots of milestones particularly Harry Potter & various films he was in through the 90s up until his death in 2016. Alan’s widow, Rima’s segment particularly near the end is incredibly moving. I’m so glad this book lived up to all my expectations!!!!

Disappointing. May make better book to read.
I'm rather sad that this was not for me. Other reviews were so good. I found it mostly rather tedious with a few humorous moments.
I really didn't like the narraters voice at all.
I tried for 5 hours, then did a little of later chapters to see if it was any different. The the last few months of his life.
A wonderful actor but I'm afraid I found him rather too much of a "acting lovie" in the way he spoke about others.
Such a pity.

loved it
Who could have known that behind the evil Snape and snappily dressed psychopath Hans Gruber was such a kind and gentle soul. Its a book that just seems to cheer you up.

Remarkable, funny and touching
A wonderful memoir from an exceptional actor. At turns touching, hilarious, bitchy, introspective and deeply insightful about the creative process.
Not well served by the narrator who is competent, but miscast and rather too mature. Would have preferred to hear a younger voice, able to convey Alan's delicious sense of irony, without sounding morose.
Overall, a fabulous listen.
