Doch dort stößt er allseits auf Ablehnung. Und seltsamerweise drängt ihn bald auch die Großmutter, die Ermittlungen einzustellen. Maigret fragt sich, warum er sich überhaupt auf die Sache eingelassen hat. Und es kommt noch schlimmer. Man droht ihm, versucht, ihn zu erpressen, schießt gar auf ihn...
