About this listen

It is 58 BC, and the mighty Tenth Legion, camped in Northern Italy, prepare for the arrival of the most notorious general in Roman history: Julius Caesar. Marcus Falerius Fronto, commander of the Tenth, is a career soldier and longtime companion of Caesar's.

Despite his desire for the simplicity of the military life, he cannot help but be drawn into intrigue and politics as Caesar engineers a motive to invade the lands of Gaul. Fronto is about to discover that politics can be as dangerous as battle, that old enemies can be trusted more than new friends, and that standing close to such a shining figure as Caesar, even the most ethical of men risk being burned.

5 star sweep

Loved the narration of the characters, the story was cleverly put together and the battles were written so clearly and illustrate a great picture as you listen/read

That is the first book by this author that I have listened to and I was captivated from beginning to end by the historical events and by the variety of interesting characters depicted.

Superb Story Telling

Firstly let me say that I am an ardent Simon Scarrow fan. I find it difficult to listen to other authors work. That was, until I found this book ! The story and presentation were up to anything I have listened to on Audible before I normally listen at night but I have found myself sneaking quick bursts of story during the daytime as well. Now I have two very talented authors to follow. I recommend this title to anyone wanting to follow the exploits of the Roman Legions. This presentation is only book 1 in the series. I will certainly listen to more

Strategy

Great story. Well researched. Was a pleasure to listen how army's of that era formed, marched fought ect. Good narrator aswell. There were a few times that made me laugh out loud. Started book two now and I'm glad I have found another series to enjoy. Highly recommend if you like military history

Overall a great book and performance

A really good book well performed my only real critique is the mispronunciation of a few of the names.
Can’t wait to get stuck in to the next book.

A really good old fashioned rip roaring adventure

Full of details, but still a great read, or lists

Believable characters, with well written, though bloody, battles.

Solid Rome historical fiction,

A good listen once you get your head around the large cast of characters names, even better that they have the whole series on kindle unlimited
