About this listen

The 200 years' (and counting) peace was a time of tranquility that hasn't been seen since...well, ever. Mankind in the Galactic Age had finally conquered war, so what was left for the military to do but drink and barbecue? That's the kind of military that Sergeant R. Wilson Rogers lived in before he left the fleet to become a smuggler.

But it turns out that smuggling is hard. Like getting-arrested-for-dealing-with-pirates-and-forced-back-into-service kind of hard. It doesn't seem so bad - the military was a perpetual tiki party anyway - but when Rogers returns after only a year away, something has changed. These are soldiers - actual soldiers doing actual soldier things like preparing for a war that Rogers is sure doesn't exist. Rogers vows to put a stop to all this nonsense - even if it means doing actual work.

With an experienced ear for military doublespeak, Joe Zieja has created a remarkable and sarcastic adventure in Mechanical Failure.

Great book

My initial dismay at discovering the author was reading it disappeared within the first minute. It's the first Audible book I have listened to at normal speed. Great job Joe Zieja! It's funny, fast paced and thoroughly enjoyable. Great narration.

Fun, good pace, great narration

See my description above, that’s all the creativity I have left for Audible today. And they want a 15 word minimum FFS read my title!

Started strong

The author does a great job narrating. Just got a bit lack lustre half way through.

Either long slow start or boring.

I did not finish the book. I got a couple of hours in and still boring. Plus the main character was unappealinf. Not a book for me.

Fun simple scifi - easy listening

Hey, it was free! Narrator is very good, but not outstanding, story is very simple - dont' expect ANY suprises. Humour is mostly dry and enjoyable. This is lightweight stuff, but, if like me, audiobooks keep you company whilst working, it fits the bill. 5 stars? no way, there is so much better out there, but, it's good fun and worthy of 3-4. I gave a generous 4 as it was free

Takes a very long time to get going

I almost stopped listening to the book several times, it takes a long time to get going almost half the book, I’m glad I stuck through it ended up being a fun read.

If you are able to get through the first half the story is enjoyable, characters are infuriating at times but also relatable. The humour is obvious and that helps but at times you feel the humour is being used at the expense of some better story telling.

I smiled several times and snorted twice

It starts well, but sags in the middle. I was going to give up, but I'm glad i didn't because the last third or more picked up significantly.
