About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Jodi Picoult has an incredible talent for taking hot-button social issues and weaving them into compelling page-turners. In Mercy, she explores the depths of love in its many forms. Police chief Cameron McDonald has lived in idyllic Wheelock, Massachusetts for most of his life, as has his beloved wife Allie. Their comfortable lives are thrown into tumult, however, when Cam's distant cousin Jamie arrives in town along with his wife's dead body. Jamie admits to the murder - a mercy killing to end the pain caused by a ravaging cancer. And now Cam is torn by his oath to uphold justice and his family obligations as chief of the Scottish McDonald clan. Meanwhile, another new arrival in town, Mia Townsend, threatens to unwittingly drive a dagger through Cam's marriage. Deftly portraying the complexities of love and passion, Picoult delivers another literary triumph with Mercy.©1996 Jodi Picoult (P)2006 Recorded Books,LLC Contemporary Contemporary Romance Mystery Romance Suspense Thriller & Suspense Women's Fiction Marriage Fiction

Critic reviews

"What could have been a competent, topical novel about a mercy killing becomes, in Picoult's hands, an inspired meditation on love." ( Publishers Weekly)

I enjoyed listening to this book. The characters were likeable & the story itself was thought provoking, as well as emotionally involving. I have always been a lover of Jodi Picoult novels, and this is no different. Well worth a read.

WELL WORTH A READ.

Not my favourite but the author knows how to entertain, so I still enjoyed it. I was well up for the book with the main theme.
It didn’t need the romance thread for me, but it’s as if the author didn’t feel that the main thread was strong enough to carry the book.

Loved the premise of the main theme

Well, I’m Scottish so I did see the flaws, however having said that it was a fairly enjoyable listen and the characters were not unlikeable. It had a very serious theme and was definitely thought provoking and of course as well as this it was a very lovely love story. I would say that most women would like this and it’s definitely worth a listen.

As with most of her work, the author raises moral questions that make you think "how would I behave?"
A good and challenging storyline, read fairly well. By that I mean a few mispronounced words, but they were understandable, given that this US English and I'm used to UK English.
Nice and long, something to entertain during our winter season.

The book is beautiful written, the words a joy to listen to. The narrator is very easy to listen to too.

I found this book a bit turgid. The love affair between Cam and Mia took up a lot of the narrative and I sided with Allie throughout although she was unconvincingly oblivious to what was going on which I thought improbable. The main thrust of the story about euthanasia was quite harrowing although the husband was quite an unsympathetic character. The Scottish side story was quite boring. I like most of Jodi Piccoult's books but this is not a favourite.

Not her best

I usually love Jodi's books but found this one over-long and a bit disappointing. Well performed but could have done with a narrator more familiar with the pronunciation of Scottish and Gaelic words and names.

Not up to the usual standard by this author

I. Thoroughly enjoyed. This book. A long time since I read one of Jodi books but am a fan once again. Well done

Enthralling

Controversial and thought provoking topic but I felt it was overly long.
As a Scot, the multiple mispronunciations of Scottish places names and references was annoying too. Perhaps the narrator should research before narrating audiobooks.

Thought Provoking but Long

Jodi is deservedly well-respected and novels such as this continue to show why.
