Summary
In the autumn of 1988, Michael Palin set out from the Reform Club with an ambitious plan: to circumnavigate the world, following the route taken by Jules Verne's fictional hero Phileas Fogg 115 years earlier. The rules were simple. He had to make the journey in 80 days using only forms of transport that would have been available to Fogg. And so, complete with visas, running shoes, an inflatable globe and sound advice from Alan Whicker, Michael Palin began his incredible journey.
Crossing 17 borders and meeting innumerable challenges, he saw Venice from the back of a rubbish barge, rode around the Pyramids on a camel called Michael, and was attacked by a cockatoo in Hong Kong - amongst many other adventures. Phileas Fogg may have brought a Princess back from his travels, but Michael Palin brought back a fascinating and frequently humorous account of the journey of a lifetime.

Well written, well read. Totally absorbing.
Would love to travel like this.

A sketchbook travelogue
Well the author does warn in the introduction that anyone looking for a detailed reflection of any of the destinations travelled through will be disappointed - so I was forewarned and expected no more in this department. Nonetheless I felt the book is very sketchy, and could have gone more in depth into any one of a range of arenas - human experience, environmentalism, navigation, maritime history, whatever- instead it really does skim many surfaces without every really getting stuck in.
I was left with the idea that the whole experience of writing this was all a bit of a chore for Palin. It's a book where it's single greatest strength is the idea of it, oh and let's chuck in a celebrity author for good measure.
Don't go looking for two many laughs either. Python fans will be left wondering from which area of the sky did aliens invade a tanker or ocean liner to pluck up the real Michael Palin, to be replaced by this rather sombre fellow.
It took me a lot more than 80 days to crawl through this, though in the end I got there, and can't bemoan the fact I reached the end - for all its faults and bemoaning of customs officials worldwide, its an archaic glimpse of a world of unusual (if bored) travel before the invention of covid-19 made global travel nigh on impossible.

Great.
It's Michael Palins round the world in 80 days. It's witty and insightful. Also he's not a complete smug prat about going on an adventure like some TV guys. My only complaint is I thought it was pole to pole but that was my fault.

The book that started a legacy!
Michael Palin narrates his fantastic journey around the globe, and in doing so he encouraged me to go out and see the world.

Takes me back to the original TV series.
I really enjoyed this in the late 89’s and the audiobook did not disappoint.

Thoroughly enjoyable!
Having read the original story last year and seen the TV series on the BBC of Michael Palin as a child and loved it all, I had no doubt that this would be any different. How wrong I was, this was even more interesting and entertaining.

A nice way to relive the classic journey.
A great journey and MP is a good companion. Understandable with such vast distances travelled that visits to each continent seem brief and lack a bit of detail. I enjoyed it but there are other travel writers like Bill Bryson I prefer.
