About this listen

A day doesn't go by without money coming into our interactions. But how much do we really understand it? We know we need money. We tend to want more of it. But why do we behave so strangely with it? And why does it have such a hold on us?

Award-winning BBC Radio 4 presenter Claudia Hammond delves into the surprising psychology of money to show us that our relationship with the stuff is more complex than we might think. Exploring the latest research in psychology, neuroscience and behavioural economics, she also reveals some simple and effective tricks that will help you think about, use and save money better - from how being grumpy can stop you getting ripped off to why you should opt for the more expensive pain relief and why you should never offer to pay your friends for favours.

An eye-opening and entertaining investigation into the power money holds over us, Mind over Money will change the way you view the cash in your wallet and the figures in your bank account forever.

I'm fascinated by psychology and I really enjoyed Mind Over Money. It's one of those books that when you're listening to it, you keep wanting to interrupt the person next to you (who is generally reading the sports news), and share another fascinating snippet.

Claudia Hammond presents the results of a wide range of studies into how we feel, think and act regarding money. She covers topics such as shopping, spending, saving, tipping, bribery and gambling. If you've ever wondered, "why did I buy that?" then this book will give you some insight into why we often act irrationally with our money. Why do I grumble if the supermarket puts up the price of a bottle of gin by a few pence, yet happily shell out £10 for a cocktail in a bar? And, there's a section at the end on how we can improve our money habits - in part, simply by being aware of the way our brains work.

Hammond, with her radio experience, naturally does a very good job of the narration. However, it is a pretty dry topic and I was getting a wee bit 'over it' by the end of 9 1/2 hours.

Ever wonder "why did I buy that?" Then read this.

An excellent book which provides an insight into how we think about money and how irrational many financial decisions are. The book is well researched and draws on many experiments and real life examples.

Well researched, very informative

Narrator was excellent, and easy to listen to.

This book gave me insights into a lot of studies which cover the psychology of money.

I can see how this can be useful as a lifehack if you're not fully aware of your own relationship with money.

I'd definitely give it another listen at some point but I'll be taking notes next time to share some of the interesting facts with friends!

Great insights

As expected from a BBC broadcaster, this was an excellently and entertainingly written and presented. However if you have read any Behavioural Economics or psychology, then there is nothing new here, it just brings it together in one place. The actual advice is condensed to 5mins at the end. Still worth a listen if you are interested in this sort of thing, as I am!

Really enjoyable listen but...

I learned so much about myself listening to this, and you will too. it doesn't matter how big or small your bank balance is. You will learn a lot about how we see money and how it effects our outlooks in relation to debt, people, and other things in life, it will help you to either enjoy your money or to save it.

fantastic read, couldn't wait to consume all the content and bumped up the speed!

Really interesting accumulation of research insights I already knew and some I didn't, but read at a breakneck speed that makes it hard to follow.
