About this listen

John Self is addicted to life. Porn freak and jetsetter, a aficionado of wealth and women, Self is the shameless heir to a fast-food culture where money beats out an insistent invitation to futile self-gratification. Out in New York, mingling with the mighty, making a fortune but spending more, Self is embroiled in the corruption, the brutality, and the obscenity of the money conspiracy.©1984 Martin Amis (P)2008 BBC Audiobooks Ltd Dark Humour Fiction Literature & Fiction Satire Money Funny Witty

Critic reviews

"Terribly, terminally funny; laughter in the dark, if ever I heard it." ( The Guardian)

A book if it's time but also still relevant, something that you should be ashamed of and also knowledgeable of, superbly written in every sense, funny, witty, dreadful and fun and terrible. Some will take against it I'm sure.
Steven Pacey is brilliant, so good I will consider his narration as a possible future purchase.

Loved it

Money is a novel written as a Kerouac-esque stream of consiousness, just without the romanticism or sense of adventure.

There are some meomorable lines and laugh-aloud moments scattered throughout, but the redeeming quality for me was Steven Pacey's performance as narrator. I'll definitely be on the look out for his work in future.

Average story, Incredible performance

A lot of this book is very funny and very well written. I struggled at times because the main character was so difficult to like but I'm glad I stuck with it

Excellent book, well written

This is a fantastic audio version of Martin Amis' masterpiece. Steven Pacey is perfect for 'Money' and does the insane chaos that is John Self's existence full justice with his performance here. Like no other book you will ever read. the prose is genius, laugh out loud funny with more quotable lines than you will ever be capable of recalling.

Favourite book from my favourite author

Amis’s funniest novel hasn’t dated at all in 40 years.. Stephen Pacey does an incredible job of bringing the characters to life: his Lorne Guyland in particular is side-splittingly hilarious. I’ve listened to this book umpteen times and still find myself coming back to it when in need of a lift. I’d give it 6 stars if I could. RIP Martin, and god bless you Stephen!

Timeless, hilarious, superbly narrated

Amis is unbeaten. Money is up there with his best. Pacey captures the characters and vibe perfectly.

THE novel of the 20th Century.

Could not stop listening. The narrator is unbelievable- I listen to a lot of audiobooks and he’s the best yet. The ‘story’ is a million miles an hour while also developing slowly - I found it absolutely fascinating. Grim, painful, gritty and with strong views coming from the author but somehow just about manages to be hopeful/ transcendental at the end. Obvious and subtle with a ‘whodunnit’ thrown in for good measure. It’s been a ride!

Gripping, painful, philosophical!

Read this book. It is a work that perfectly describes the 80s and the Thatcher decade. The book gets better with each passing chapter. Its points are both subtle and obvious. Its characters named in modern Dickensian style.

Great novel. Superb narration. First class work from the author and narrator. A very erudite tome.

Master class

This is one of the best-narrated audiobooks I've ever listened to. Pacey nails the voices, especially the weary transatlantic sarcasm of the protagonist-narrator John Self. The novel is a classic of 'skaz,' so it lends itself to being read aloud. It captures in brilliant detail the tacky unpleasantness of the early 1980s and of movie stars in general.

Superb
