About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin

Now a major BBC series starring Lesley Manville

Featuring his famous literary Detective Atticus Pund and Susan Ryeland, hero of the worldwide best seller Magpie Murders, a brilliantly brain-teasing literary thriller by Anthony Horowitz. The follow-up to Magpie Murders.

Retired publisher Susan Ryeland is living the good life. She is running a small hotel on a Greek island with her long-term boyfriend, Andreas. It should be everything she's always wanted - but is it? She's exhausted with the responsibilities of making everything work on an island where nothing ever does, and truth be told she's beginning to miss her old life in London.

And then a couple - the Trehearnes - come to stay, and the story they tell about an unfortunate murder that took place on the same day and in the same hotel in which their daughter was married is such a strange and mysterious one that Susan finds herself increasingly fascinated by it. And when the Trehearnes tell her that their daughter is now missing, Susan knows that she must return to London and find out what really happened....

Great fun

I loved this second book in the series and certainly hope there will be more. Once again the book is actually two in one and, therefore, there is a lot to pay attention to. I loved the attention to detail in both murder mysteries. The narration brings both parts of the book to life. I will listen to this one again!

Not as good as the three previous...

Generally enjoyable but the whole Alan Conway book in the middle is too distracting from the plot. Some major holes in main plot. The protagonist has become less likeable and the pat ending was over-sugared.

Lesley Manville has a lovely reading voice but struggles with different characters and her Glaswegian accent was ... risible at best.

Endless fun

This audio book is so much fun and very absorbing. I spent hours trying to figure out the various clues but still missed many of them.

A tricky format

As a book it is maybe easier but to listen without the luxury of doing so in one go meant I’d forgotten who people were from the first part by the time we revisited in the last part and couldn’t flick back to remind myself. So while the plot was interesting I found it a harder listen than other books by Anthony Horowitz .

Excellent

As good as the first instalment. I was totally hooked. So clever. I was particularly looking forward to ‘the book within a book’ concept again, which was so enjoyable in Magpie Murders. I can’t recommend highly enough.

great story shame about the narration

As always thoroughly enjoyed Horowitz's storytelling and narrative development. Narration less good than first in series; Scottish accent for Adrian simply appalling. Please, please do not attempt Glasgow and West Coast if not confident or voice coached. As a Scottish
listener it undermined the experience.

A terrific follow up to Magpie Murders.

Although this follows the same format as Magpie Murders - a novel within a novel, it’s a very different, yet clever, story line. The 2 narrators both do an excellent job and it’s a very entertaining listen. It does need a careful listen, however, if you are to pick up the clues…..
Any chance of another, Mr Horowitz? Please?

Kept me thinking

I find myself drawn to murder mystery stories on TV, and film, but You cannot beat a good who done it book and this is another winner in this category. Can't wait for the next one.

love it

Honestly. Book 1 was great and I didn't want it to end. But I'm glad it did. The ending was very satisfying.
Mr Horowitz has really finished off the character though and I don't think well be seeing book 3. If there is one I'll be the 1st to buy it.
