The first volume in a stunning trilogy set in the world of Arthurian legend and told from the perspective of its traditional antagonist, Morgan Le Fay.

Even as a girl Morgan has always been wild, like the seas which batter the cliffs beneath her home, Tintagel Castle. But she has always been safe, too.

Then one day her father is called away to a war from which he does not return. In his place comes the High King, Uther Pendragon, with the sorcerer Merlin lurking in his wake. Uther claims Morgan’s mother, the Lady Igraine as his queen.

Now, in a world of knights and chivalry where she is all but voiceless, Morgan is faced with a choice: to follow her own fierce intelligence or to submit to the limitations powerful men would place upon her. She cannot, she will not choose submission.

So begins this richly told debut from Sophie Keetch, which traces Morgan’s journey to adulthood. She will fall in love with a man saved from the sea. She will defy kings and suffer the consequences. At times she will almost despair. But ultimately she will discover a power in herself that even Merlin is awed by–a power that will give her control of her own destiny and which see her join Arthur at Camelot.

And even this is only a beginning…

I was captivated by this account of the beginning of the legend of King Arthur, told from the female perspective of Morgan Le Fey. It begins to explain her story and character in a fascinating way, and in a way that is very relatable for today's women; while Morgan's circumstances contrast starkly with the freedom most women have by right now, it also shows how she discovers and begins to use her inner power, strength and independent spirit to set herself free. She has the great advantage of magic on her side, but I think there are lessons for ordinary women here as well, about taking control of our lives and empowering ourselves.

The story is compelling in itself, driving forward very well, and is full of interesting detail along the way.

I also thought the narrator Vanessa Kirby did an excellent job - her voice is very well suited to this role, with just the right mix of emotion and control, drawing us in and conveying Morgan's character and story perfectly.

I very much look forward to future novels in this series.

I loved this historical romance. The story was gripping and held my attention right from the start. I highly recommend this book.

The Ancients knew probably as much about Energy healing as we are aware of. This isn’t self-evident and is as mysterious as ghosts are to most people- having a ghost slap my face was a strange personal experience recently. That prophets existed and did amazing things is a truth. Why lies are told and theories don’t work; is similar to asking why some women are expected to go to work, cook and clean like an automaton. Women were not given the same rights as men, the Laws still discriminate and life is full of theories today. We are just minuscule thinkers in a huge cosmos.

I very rarely review a book but this one left me wanting more so much more.( which I think is the sign of a very good book) I am really hoping sophie is working on a follow up of Morgan’s life. She had me gripped from the beginning and all to soon the story was told. Well described characters pull together to tell a compelling story of a women who survives her struggles victorious despite the insistence of the men in her life to continually knock her back. A recommended read!

Really enjoyed this book.

It is a languid story. Imagining the perspective of Morgana, which was a novel idea and provided a lot of fresh thinking and ideas.

I started off reading, but then switched to the Audiobook while doing chores. I think the Audiobook makes the story come alive more, and kept my attention more.

It is neither a happy nor sad story, as the events are equally filled with both. Yet, I think sadness was ultimately the overarching emotion from this book.

Well worth a listen, but I believe it is for those who appreciate a relaxed and mature progression.

Narration was excellent in my opinion.
