About this listen

Zorian Kazinski has all the time in the world to get stronger, and he plans on taking full advantage of it.

A teenage mage of humble birth and slightly above-average skill, Zorian is attending his third year of education at Cyoria's magical academy. A driven and quiet young man, he is consumed by a desire to ensure his own future and free himself of the influence of his family, resenting the Kazinskis for favoring his brothers over him. Consequently, Zorian has no time for pointless distractions, much less other people's problems.

As it happens, though, time is something he is about to get plenty of.

On the eve of Cyoria's annual summer festival, Zorian is murdered, then abruptly brought back to the beginning of the month, just before he was about to take the train to school. Finding himself trapped in a time loop with no clear end or exit, he will have to look both within and without to unravel the mystery set before him. He does have to unravel it, too, because the loop clearly wasn’t made for his sake, and in a world of magic even a time traveler isn't safe from those who wish him ill.

Fortunately for Zorian, repetition is the mother of learning….

Amazing story but ok voice actor

Spoiler free

The story itself is so captivating and amazingly paced. I ended up finishing the book in 2 days after I got into it. The introduction was a bit confusing to get into, but it becomes easier to understand the world building. The world building and mentioning of information is so thought out, it encourages you to theories the importance of some mentioning for it to be later pulled off in an entertaining way.

The only downside for me is the voice actor. It sounds so stilted and not reflective of the book. Their overall pacing of their words throws me off a lot. Furthermore, their feminine voice is painful to hear. I could bear through it, but had time to physically read so I ended up purchasing the kindle version and finishing off the book that way.

In the end, I HIGHLY recommend this book! I am too impatient to wait for more, so going to read the rest on RoyalRoad ahaha

Phenomenal Story

Absolutely incredible story, a bit slow to begin with but the pay off is so worth it to enjoy the latter parts of the books.

I won’t lie if I had to listen to Zorian’s sister cry out MORNING one more time!! I was going to delete the book off my phone and never start again and then I realised how masterful that was that I was feeling the same irritation Zorian was feeling. I’ve never been so utterly swept up in characters emotions.

Would definitely recommend for any progression fantasy fans, or anyone into fantasy or time travel novels in general

Really hated the narrator. Accents were ridiculous.

Good story would have been much better read by someone else. It took work to persevere long enough to get into the story.

Rinse and repeat

Good book. Definitely worth the credit. Hope the series isn't a disappointment. Hopefully the main character stops being so mundane.

a good book

This is a good book, but i do not recomend trying to finish all 4 in one go like i did. Time loop stories are by their nature always repedative, but the author does a good job of creating progress. there are however times where the overlap is a bit mutch, so pacing yourself will give a better experience

Learning Magic, and Learning Characters

A book unlike others I've read, Mother of Learning takes an odd approach to its main selling point! While yes, it is a story about looping around and learning, it's not truly a power fantasy, and it's barely a mystery for the majority of the story, though parts of those elements exist, of course!

No, this story is about magic and characters. It delves deep into the magic, the why and how of it all, explaining it in a way that makes sense and creates this compelling dynamic both Zorian and the listener has with it! Not to mention, when you learn about the magic, you learn about an awesome world and how it shaped it, how it shaped cultures even! It's truly fascinating and overall, made me itchy for more stories that focus simply on the phenomenon of magic!

Additionally, it's also about character. Besides the main character Zorian, who, starts out a bit aloof or even, just normal for a teenager, you see him grow into paranoia, empathy and overall, into understanding that people are complicated and more than they look. And the side characters, that at first seem stereotypical and flat, the more time you spend learning about them become cooler and vibrant, which mirrors Zorian's views quite nicely!

The narration is, interesting, is a good way to put it. Some voices are grating, but that is the point. The voices match the characters, even at times to the annoyance of the listener, but I think it is genuinely a good way to sell it! Though some accents, especially the more, stereotypical ones, are a bit much. But overall, the diction and theatricality is great!

I loved this book, and truly think it's something special! Can't wait for the continuation and can't recommend it enough!

shame about the narration.

My ears are bleeding. I've only gone and bought the first 3 books and the narration is probably the worst I've ever heard. It's sound like a kids program called horrid Henry. I've only got to the 3rd chapter and that's as much as I can take. I've bought them so I'll have to listern to them eventually, but right now I need to step away.

The start of an epic and amazing story

I have now finished all 4 books and it is really well written, the world building is astonishing and the the story is very thrilling. The Narration is amazing. the mysteries are very smart and will never too obvious. i recommend this to anyone who likes longwinded and enticing stories that shows very satisfying main character progression.

Once you get past...

Once you get past the slightly annoying voice acting of a small child, it becomes an excellent and well-thought-out narrative, with brilliant characterisation and a unique take on a old trope.
