About this listen

Charlene Morris knew Salem, Massachusetts, had a spooky reputation. But when she decided to open her B&B there, she expected guests - not ghosts....

A grieving young widow, Charlene needed a new start - so she bought a historic mansion, sight unseen, and drove from Chicago to New England to start turning it into a bed-and-breakfast.

On her first night in the house, she awakens to find a handsome man with startling blue eyes in her bedroom. Terror turns to utter disbelief when he politely introduces himself as Jack Strathmore - and explains that he used to live here - when he was alive.

He firmly believes that someone pushed him down the stairs three years ago, and he won't be able to leave until someone figures out who.

If Charlene wants to get her business up and running in time for the Halloween tourist rush, and get this haunting house guest out of the way, she'll have to investigate. Though truth be told, this ghost is starting to grow on her....

A good plot twist

Story was slow but the main character was rushed into a weird relationship over an extremely short 2 week period. it did detract from the story.
also the name Charlene sounds trashy and worst still calling the B&B Charlene's when it was reiterated that it was going to be upmarket. Sounds like a cheesy diner. Better to have called it Strathmore House. Overall listenable

Ticks all the boxes

I was surprised to see this book hadn't received any ratings or reviews. It deserves them, so I thought I'd start.

If you're after an enjoyable paranormal cosy mystery this has you covered. It is an easy listen, and well narrated. It is set in an old house in Salem, complete with a widow's walk, a handsome, confused ghost, and a persistent clever silver cat determined to own the new resident. Our heroine is fleeing the heartbreak of recent widowhood when she moves from the windy city to witch city to begin a new life in hospitality. She doesn't believe in ghosts and ghouls until she meets Jack, a former resident who asks her to investigate his murder before he can move on. Caught between the attentions of mortal men, the memory of her late husband, and a growing frustrated attraction with her often see-through housemate, there is plenty of romance, but not the heavily steamy kind. There is crime and intrigue too, as our heroine quickly becomes the noisiest neighbour ever, trying to uncover a murderer when no one believes the death was suspicious, unearthing other buried secrets along the way. Soon one of her suspects is found murdered. All the while, she is doing up the beautiful house she has bought in time for Halloween. So, there is a lot of charm, and it ticked a lot of boxes for the genre.

I grew up on Agatha Christie and read and listen to a lot of crime and am fairly used to twists and turns. Not for the first time, I had guessed who had done it and how a couple of chapters ahead of time, but it didn't ruin my enjoyment. It was well constructed, with clues popping up in parts of the plot that were obviously about her investigations. I'd like more details about Salem, and more quirky, interesting characters, but those there were worked nicely into the narrative. There was a lot of New England old family lines snobbery, which also worked into the story.

I will be listening to the next book in the series, and am interested in more books by the author.
