About this listen
My Struggle introduces American listeners to the audacious, addictive, and profoundly surprising international literary sensation that is the provocative and brilliant six-volume autobiographical novel by Karl Ove Knausgaard. It has already been anointed a Proustian masterpiece and is the rare work of dazzling literary originality that is intense and irresistible.
Unafraid of the big issues - death, love, art, fear - and yet committed to the intimate details of life as it is lived, My Struggle is an essential work of contemporary literature.

Extraordinary
I finally finished the whole of My Struggle. It was worth it and thanks to Ballerini’s perfectly poised reading fairly effortless.
This is an extraordinary book, the climax and endpoint of this series that is in part a meditation on what it means to be a European man in the 21st century. Be prepared for a very long central section about Hitler when seems especially relevant to our current times.

What now, Karl Ove?
My headline sounds as if it relates to the author but really I'm struggling to face up to walking away from the six volume marathon I've been in without a break and finding something else to get absorbed in.
Unlike other reviewers I was late to the party. I'd heard of Knaussgard but wasn't attracted to trying My Struggle until seeing an interview with Ferdia Lennon where he mentioned he was reading him. I had loved Glorious Exploits and was impressed by interviews with FL so this was enough of a prompt to try it.
Plenty of other reviewers have articulated well the distinctive features of My Struggle and I am too lazy to try to do better. Suffice to say I found the books compelling, occasionally a little slow, absolutely worth staying with, very moving at times, extraordinarily frank and usually relatable.
I have read Proust, Joyce and Mann so I was able to appreciate Knaussgard's references to this those writers. He himself is not in the same league as any of those three but then who is? He has written something unique and it makes for terrific audiobooks with the reading of Eduardo Ballerini.
I understand Ballerini has been acclaimed for his marathon performance in this series and rightly so. He is every bit as good as Ron Silver was in reading Philip Roth, Neville Jason reading Proust and Jim Norton reading Joyce.

A long journey
This book really made me reflect on my own life. There is a Hitler section and interesting as it is .....it’s just a bit strange how it just suddenly appears....and really long I think there is a whole section in this book about 10 hours long where it is a little less engaging in places but apart from that it’s a great book and totally worth getting....even with that bit it’s amazing
