About this listen

Summer. Massachusetts. An old Silver Wraith with a frightening history. A story about one serial killer and his lingering, unfinished business. Anyone could be next. We're going to Christmasland....

NOS4A2 is an old-fashioned horror novel in the best sense. Claustrophobic, gripping and terrifying, this is a story that will have you on the edge of the seat while you listen and leaving the lights on while you sleep. With the horrific tale of Charles Manx and his Silver Wraith, Joe Hill has established himself as the premiere horror and supernatural thriller writer of his generation.

Addictive.

Really enjoyed the book. Will be reading more from this author. I really enjoy Stephen Kings early work, this book is on par with that.
Highly recommend. Love it when a book can be written like this one.

An enthralling read

Further to the authors comments about the orater "Kate Mulgrew" , I must add my support to her for making the book and the characters such an enjoyable read. For those of you that aren't trekkies, Kate Mulgrew played "Captain Janeway" in the Starship Voyager series. Anyway to the book; A great read which I enjoyed from the beginning to the end. I like the fact that the story leaves you wandering what will happen next?

brilliant book, exceptionally read

The narrator (Kate Mulgrew) really brought this book alive with a fantastic array of believable character voices.

The story is very enjoyable with spooky ideas, excellent description, a protagonist you root for throughout, and an antagonist you can't wait to see get his comeuppance! I would recommend to any horror / fantasy fan, especially if you've read Joe Hill or Steven King before.

It definitely runs in the family.

It's no longer news that Joe Hill is Stephen King's son, nor is it news that he is a very talented writer and I knew this going into this novel. But good lord I didn't expect the emotional guy punches this book delivered, the laughs and the tears it brought me were arguably feelings of stronger emotions than King has done in the thirty or forty books of his that I've read. It's almost a shame that Hill doesn't write as quickly as his father, but that also makes his work that much sweeter when we get them.

Kate Mulgrew was fantastic as usual, made me smile when she used a Russian accent towards the end of the novel, and gave the characters and extra dimension and gave a very creepy performance for two of the villains.

I highly recommend this book to any fans of King (obviously) and to any fans of horror and literature in general. I believe this book will go down in a similar regard to The Shining, and Salem's Lot.

Fantastic

If you could sum up NOS4R2 in three words, what would they be?

Scary and engrossing

What other book might you compare NOS4R2 to, and why?

As the author is Stephen King's son it is tempting to compare but I think it is closer to Dracula and classic horror/thrillers.

What about Kate Mulgrew’s performance did you like?

She managed to keep each character distinct without resorting to too many cheesy accents.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I sat in the car after I parked a few times, even pleased to be stuck in a traffic jam once.

Any additional comments?

I am eagerly awaiting Jo's next novel, first day purchase for sure.

Brilliant narration and an excellent story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Most definitely - it's not something I thought I would like but it actually turned out to be a really good read (or listen). The narration by Kate Mulgrew really helped I think - she puts a lot of effort into it and I think she is the perfect narrator for this story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of NOS4R2?

The whole thing - a great read, gripping build up.

What about Kate Mulgrew’s performance did you like?

She is excellent! Used different voices for different characters and really put a lot of effort into the narration which can make all the difference to an audiobook.

Any additional comments?

Even if you think this might not be your 'thing' it's actually worth the read - I was pleasantly surprised as this is not the sort of genre I normally go for. At the end there is an interview with the author which was actually really interesting - he didn't mention it but he is actually Stephen King's son, which sort of makes sense now I have listened to the book! Don't let that put you off (if you aren't a Stephen King fan) as Joe Hill is a great author in his own right.
