Martin får en svår start i livet när hans föräldrar lämnar honom och hans syskon. Fadern dör medan modern emigrerar till Amerika. Martin hamnar då under kommunens beskydd, eller snarare våld. För att uthärda de dåliga förhållandena tar han sin tillflykt till drömmarnas och skolans värld. Sammanlagt är han på tre fosterhem innan han beslutar sig för att rymma efter en misshandel. Handlingen är förlagd till Blekinge och tar sin början omkring sekelskiftet.

Harry Edmund Martinson (1904-1978) räknas som en av våra stora författare och poeter under 1900-talet. Han mottog Frödingstipendiet 1947 och Nobelpriset i litteratur 1974 (tillsammans med Eyvind Johnson).
